So my wife bought me a pipe for Christmas. She went to a cigar shop and bought what she thought was a pretty one. They left the price tag on the pipe-25 dollars. I'm looking at this pipe and thinking there is no way this is a 25 dollar pipe. Anyway, its a Savinelli Turtuga 208...nice little pipe. I know they are good pipes but I'm wondering if there is anything I need to watch out for with that model. Also, it is a used pipe (never had an estate one before)...its been cleaned already...anything I should check to make sure they did correctly when they cleaned the thing? Thanks for your help guys!

I can't find a Sav shape 208 anywhere online so I don't know what your pipe looks like, but...

If a tortuga, I believe the stem should be a tortoiseshell acrylic. It originally would have come with a matching cap to cover the bowl, but don't know if that made it to you also.

Cleaning - If the bowl looks good (doesn't need reaming or anything) and the tenon looks clear then I would just run a high proof alcohol soaked pipe cleaner or two through the stem, let it dry and smoke the crap out of it. If it's got any ghosts that you can't stand then do a BoB and/or internet search for solutions involving q-tips and/or cotton balls, alcohol, salt, etc.

Things to watch out for - If you did get the cap, make sure you take it off and fill with tobacco before trying to light.

It didn't come with a cap. Its a little billiard. I tried to post a picture of it but I can't seem to get our digital camera to co-operate at this time. Now I did throw out the little filter thing inside...the draw is super tight anyway...I don't even see any carb in the bowl, so they really cleaned the snot out of it. Probably will smoke a half bowl in it tonight...

You took out the filter and the draw is still tight? Like unsmokable tight or just not wide open?

If it is uber tight...I'm surprised a bit at that. I would imagine either the drilling is off or there is some sort of airway obstruction there.

The draw is just that way I think. The airhole is tiny tiny tiny. But I can pass a pipe cleaner into the bowl so there isn't any obstructions. I did go through it with vodka too just for the heck of it. Honestly, at the end of the mouthpiece it is like a large pinhole...small pipe cleaners are snug through it but they go through. In about an hr, once my kids settle down, I'm going to go try the sucker and see how it goes.
