Trying my 4th bowl of Petersons Sherlock Holmes. I am really trying to like it because...well...I bought it. However I just can't deny that its a bit of a let down. Or is it? I can't quite decide.
Of course I bought this because of the name. Prior to opening it I had my own visions of what a tobacco named after Holmes would be like. I was anticipating something dark and contemplative. To my surprise what awaited me inside the tin resembled something for like roll your own cigarette tobacco. I was instantly reminded of my treeplanting days and smoking roll your own American Spirit. Thin strands of yellow and orange tobacco. Attractive but not what I would associate with a character who smokes dottle, keeps his tobacco in a slipper and smokes up to 3 bowls consecutively. Nonetheless I gave it a whiff and found the tin note to be somewhat interesting. Rather than dark and rich it was more like fermented fruit...I was reminded of summer on a farm. It has its merits.

I loaded up a smaller bowl and gave it a try. Tasted much like cigarette tobacco to me. Mind you I would say that it tasted like a rather fine and sophisticated cigarette tobacco. It does have a flavor to it. A tangy bright taste that I feel on the back of the tongue. Where I found it does stand out is in the aftertaste. While some tobaccos can leave you with a bit of an acrid taste in the mouth once you get to the end, this one leaves me with a taste that I like to savor. A very clean and pure tobacco taste lingers in my mouth for a good 30 minutes after Im done. Enjoyable indeed.

My thoughts on Sherlock Holmes are this. If it is going to be named after a fictional literary character, it should be renamed Great Gatsby. It is a sophisticated, debonair smoke. It could be enjoyed during languid summer days sipping a cool drink. Once I began calling it the Great Gatsby I began expecting something different from it and began to enjoy it a bit more. Funny how the brain works.

Cheers

With a name like Sherlock Holmes, how could it possibly live up to the standards? That said, something tells me that if he smoked a pipe Gatsby would be only slightly less fussy about his tobacco of choice.

Perhaps it should be renamed "Philip Marlowe, Private Eye"
