So I brought this pipe with me to the CPCC meeting on Saturday the 11th with the intent to fill it with some aged OGS that I have for its maiden voyage. Instead, one of the club members offered me some very special baccy from House of Calabash. What the blend was, I cannot remember, but damn I wish I could.

This pipe smoked like a champion. I believed (and still believe) the airway at the bit to be too wide, but the airflow in the pipe was practically perfect once there was tobacco in there. From the creating side, I can't imagine ever getting the bit thin enough to be comfortable with the airway at 2.5mm, but damn did that provide a great draw. I'll be asking around how to have a thinner airway but maintain airflow like that. It was very easy to keep the tobacco lit, even when I set the pipe down for up to 5 minutes, it stayed lit like it had never left my mouth. The flavor was incredible and now every time I look over at this pipe, I start to salivate thinking about that first smoke. I've still got the taste in my mouth.

I'm going to keep on smokin' this pipe and will report back if I get a similar experience with other blends. The first smoke was transcendent, which I can only take partial credit for due to the extremely high quality of the baccy. What a solo voyage!

That's awesome news David. Sounds like your maiden voyage was a complete success. When do you start making pipes for the rest of us brothers?!?!?!? :D

Enjoy!! Sounds like a dream!

Now that we have YOUR review about it, you need to send it on to the rest of the Brothers for a GROUP review :p We can each smoke it daily for a month and you should get it back, WELL broken in in about 2/3 years :p Just PM me and I'll send you my address and you can mail it to me and I'll get this started :p

Uber, keeping the bit thin but the airflow, well, flowing... amounts to going from a round hole of dimension x (so let's use 5mm as an example diameter) to a thin slot of dimension x. WTF am I talking about?

Let's take the area of that hole 5mm diameter = 2.5 mm radius. Area = piRR so 3.14x2.5x2.5= 19.6 mm squared. If you take a slot that is 2mm high, it needs to be about 9mm across to have the same area (which is to say it will allow the same volume of smoke through at the same speed/pressure).

I'm not saying this is the right way, or the only right way to build a pipe, but it's one way to do it - keep a constant volume airway. I actually restrict my airway a little about an inch from the button, but that's just me, and I start out with 11/64" at the bowl, so the airway can use a little tightening at some point.

Get yerself a wee little file and get in there!

Awesome info, Sas! *diligently scribbles notes in his moleskin*

Dave,

That is GREAT news, bro! I know I am most critical of my own creations. Based on that premise it's probably a MONSTER-SMOKER!

Well done, my friend!
