I have a couple of Soren freehand pipes that I really like for both the way that they smoke and the way that they look. My most recent pruchase was from e-bay for $25 and was a bit of a basket case. A good cleaning, light sanding, wax buffing and a new vulcanite freehand stem and the thing looks like new and has become my new favorite.
I did a search for Soren on the BoB forum and didn't turn up a thing. What are some opinions on this maker?

Jeff...

I have one, a poker in a natural finish. I really like this pipe, even though the draw is a little tighter than I would like. I think I paid $90 bucks, so it was a decent deal. If I found another like it, I would probably want it.

That's a great looking pipe.
Looks like you did a nice job cleaning it up.
Time to enjoy it!

Cheers,
Chris.

I have one Soren, my wife bought it for me c. '70 or '71. Smokes well, and it's the only real "freehand" pipe I've retained in my collection. Don't know much about them, though. Off topic: Harlock, what's the guitar?

Aside from the nice Sorens, great job showcasing the "day in the life of" backgrounds with the pipe photography, gents.

Harlock, if that poker had been a blast finish, it would have been awesome. I can see those "waves" hiding in the grain... it's a stunning pipe.

Where's a good place to ogle some Soren pipes for sale?

These folks seem to have a good selection and the prices look to be good as well. For "Danish Freehands" they look pretty nice :p

They're alright--I've seemed to get bored with a lot of Danish freehand style pipes lately, which is sad. I used to really like them. There's a couple on there that are more round that are alright, though.

My thoughts exactly!
From the orientation of the ring grain, it would have been a stunning blast, with the rings emanating upwards and out, in a spider web fashion right from the bottom front of the bowl. I guess whoever carved couldn't bring themselves to blast such a smooth piece of briar though...

Here's my Soren; I like the shape (for a freehand ;) ) and the finish, which is part smooth and part blast. Sorry about the dirty stem and the lousy pics...

That's a gnarly-lookin' freehand, Idle. At first I looked at it and thought, "That's kind of a mess..." ...but I kept looking at it...it's just not as carefully shaped to be a typical freehand. I've gotten bored with the typical freehand design (as mentioned) and something like that I'd happily own and smoke. The carver obviously saw something atypical about it and worked with the nature of the pipe rather than forced and fought to get a particular design--and the produc looks quite natural. I dig that. 8)

WOW! That's a nice pipe. Guess I'm a sucker for freehands of a certain sort. That must be one of them because I like it!

I'd dearly love to get my hands on that freehand that's on the Velvet tobacco pouch.
I've got three nice Nordings, a Karl Erik and a Masterson but that's it.
