I just "won" this deal on eBay at a much higher price than what I've paid for the new Davidoffs. And I don't even know the manufacturer.

I will appreciate any commentary from the brothers who own/know such pipes.

Stanwells are a good, well regarded brand. The Royal prince series was usuall around $70 new I think, but usually only really sold in European markets I think so like 50 some odd Euros I guess.

Do you have a shape number? Most of stanwell's shapes were designed by some big name carvers.

Hello Frost, the seller did not mention a number, so I will have to wait until I receive the pipe to get more info. He did mention that the pipe must be 30+ years old.

Would it be possible to link the ebay page you won it from? Sure it'll say auction closed but I'm sure some of us will be able to tell a bit about it. At that age I'd imagine it'll have a vulcanite stem and their older crowned S logo. I'd also expect some pretty spectacular graining, I've seen some older Stanwells that have some spectacular grain, their new ones are no slouches either. And as far as I know all of this is not out of the realm of possibility, if I recall correctly the royal guard series is one of their longest running finishes and is only just now being introduced to the US market. I hope I helped a bit rather than just ramble, enjoy your new friend, I love my Stanwell!

The markings on the pipe says Stanwell Royal Prince Liverpool on top and on the bottom its says Made in Denmark #113

Ah, the 113 shape is one of my favorites. I have never known who the designer was, it's not one of the shapes that you see associated with the famous names on such charts. I have a newer one in the golden danish finish...used if for Reiner LGF for a while but have switched it over to Fillmore. Here's a pic of mine on the right:

Light, good balance, medium bowl capacity. Elegant long oval shank with a brandy/billiard hybrid shaped bowl. The bowl seems to me to be at almost exactly 90 degrees (although I haven't measured), as in the slight forward lean or cant that would be common to see on most straight pipes of this nature seems to be absent. It's a very straight "proud and upright" sort of posture for the bowl, even though the bowl isn't all that tall.

Keep in mind that alot of Stanwell shapes have gone through slight evolutionary changes over the years, so one that is 30 years old may not be exactly the same shape as a new one, but they will share the same basic idea usually. The stanwell shape 30 (a sixten design I think) is a good example of this.

I think I found your ebay auction with a search of completed listings. I would say you may have paid a slightly higher price than I would have (assuming I found the right one), but I don't think you got hosed or anything. I wouldn't fret over the price since I suspect you will get a heck of a good smoker, and it's likely only going to increase in value as time goes on (if you take care of it) since Stanwell is out of business now (or at least has changed hands and nationalities).

Some estate stanwells are going for higher prices on ebay these days than the same pipe would cost new, and some new ones are going for higher on ebay than you would pay from an online vendor. The one you got looks to be in good condition from the pics on the listing.

Assuming the pipe is actually 30 years old or so, I think that is right around the time they stopped using the reg numbers but I can't recall exactly. The pipe looks to be in good shape for that vintage.

The reg # pipes are going for a fair sum these days on ebay, but your ebay listing didn't say anything about a reg #. That seller would likely have mentioned it if it was a reg # pipe.

Brother Frost, I appreciate what you've done for me!! Honestly. The pipe looks quite "new" but I've bought stuff in the past which did not look so good in my hands. And yes, I might have paid a bit to much. On the other hand, for $73.00 (R500) I can't buy a decent pipe in South Africa. I also prefer a pipe which has been smoked already, saves me the breaking in. And I believe that briar matures with time. Also I've been wanting a Canadian for years. So all in all I'm a happy man. Oh, I do look after my pipes and treat them with all due respect. I never knock out tobacco, clean a pipe after a day's use, leave a pipecleaner in while it's resting etc. So I know this Stanwell will be happy to live with me. Now of course the waiting for it is a big problem!!

Good to hear Pete, glad I could help a little. Didn't realize you were in SA, I apologize. That seller tends to clean up his pipes well. Occasionally, I have seen a few which looked like refurbs that had been "brought back from the edge" so to speak, with potential issues like overly reamed bowls. I don't think that is the case with yours though, looks to be in good shape.

I've received the pipe today! This pipe is brand new, not a nick or scratch, can't believe it's 30+ years old. It's light as a feather and the grain is absolutely gorgeous with LOTS of birds eye. Reminds me of the walnut finish on older Jaguar car's dashboard. I've smoked some Pete's Irish Oak in it and the result is sweet, no tongue burn, no gurgle right to the bottom. I'm as happy as a lark! :bounce:

Good to hear, hope you get many happy years and many happy smokes from her. Enjoy!

I have two Stanwell #11's, really nice pipes. One is a US market pipe the other is the Royal Prince EU market pipe. They look the same except for the Royal Prince stamping. They are among my favorites.
