So now I'm starting to really like English blends now is there any hope for me? Still like to smoke my aro's often but Lady virginal and Lat have stolen my heart.

My top three have been Charles Fairmorn balkan , which I liked the salty, dry, grainy tastes. Like smokey toasted italian herb and cheese bread to me.

The other is PS english oriental supreme. Really like the sweet spiciness from the orientals and the cavendish.

Last is Dunhill London mixture. Really like the high sweet quality virginias with the smokyness of the lat to make it interesting.

PS. Smoking Frog morton right now. Nothing against it just a big fan. Kind of seems boring and a little swampy / musty smelling to me. Not quite an aro not quite a english not bad just meh.

If you're smoking Plain Old Froggy, you owe it to yourself to try FMOTT. I'll send you a tin if you pm your address.

I am enjoying Ashtons 'Artisans Blend' at the moment. This is not too lat heavy, so smoking indoors will not drive your family out in to the cold dark night :)

Maltese Falcon
McClelland Oriental #14
Squadron Leader
Stokkebye Balkan Supreme

My three favorite English blends are:

C&D Star of the East
Peterson Old Dublin
Esoterica Penzance

A close fourth would be Esoterica Margate (I constantly flip-flop between Margate and Penzance).

Though I wouldn't necessary consider them prototypical English blends, SG Navy Flake and Lancer Slices are both VA/Lat flakes and are each worth trying.

This was exactly my experience.

Since you liked PS. Oriental supreme, try PS. Proper English I liked the frog, but I like PS. Better

Thanks for the suggestions. Just to narrow it down and because my local shop only gets tins no bulk. what is the best in tins from c&d , mac baren , dunhill, or mcclelland? Like to support the local guys all I can.

Here are a few of my favorites -

GLP - Odyssey & Samarra. Both of these mixtures have been around for a while and they age well and smoke with excellent balance. Both are more on the complex side. Do yourself a favor and try to find a tin of each of these with 4-5 years on it.

GLP- Lagonda. This stuff is really interesting. It's bold & flavorful yet somehow soft and mellow all at once. Almost as though he took the components of Odyssey, pressed and tumbled them according to the Old London format. Great smoke.

H&H - Larry's Blend. I recently stumbled upon this one and there may not be a better blend for the money available. 14.95 for and 8 ounce tin?

Esoterica - Margate and Penzance. Enough has been said about Penzance. Margate is really good, but like Dave_In_Philly mentioned it's very different. I have found that due to their cut both of these blends take some time to figure out, especially in prepping to smoke. However the results make it well worth the effort. Margate stands out because it's just Orientals & lat. Penzance shines but is fussy about the pipe it's in and try packing it looser than you would normally. Same goes with any blend that's heavier on darker tobacco (Odyssey, Lagonda, etc.).

B&B Tobacconists -Beck's Ol' Limey Bastard. Touted as a remake of 965, but I find that it's just plain great and I don't care for 965. Go figure.

The undisputed top three Latakia blends:

1. GLP Blackpoint
2. GLP Blackpoint
3. GLP Blackpoint

Hope that helps!

For C&D, check to see if your shop is carrying any of the Capt. Earle Flavors. Captain Earle's Private Stock is good. I haven't tried Captain Earle's Stimulus Package, but a friend of mine raves about it.

C&D Engine 99 and Epiphany are also worth checking out.

Dunhill - Nightcap.

McClelland - I enjoyed British Woods & CORPS Cyprian Star. Wilderness & Bombay Extra are also nice.

I have a lot of Lat Blends open at the moment, PM your addy if you want some samples.. :D

+1. Softly smoky and spicy. One of my favs.

I take turns with AB and Nightcap. Nightcap is fuller and smokier.

I didn't reply to this, Ian, only because I wasn't sure how deep to throw you into the Latakia pool.

I love Star of the East (flake and loose, similar, but do taste different), Nightcap, Ten Russians (for heavy stuff) and Early Morning Pipe, Blackpoint and Squadron Leader for light-to-medium stuff. I remember original Frog Morton being the best of the Froggy line (if you ask me) and was a great jumping off point for Latakia...it just doesn't hit me like it used to.

There's worth mentioning Three Oaks Syrian and Three Oaks Original (Cyprian) from McClelland, as they're not super strong, but gives you a really good look at the two Latakias if you want to know their direct flavors. Good stuff.

Boswell's Northwoods is my favorite right now, but is a bulk. One that is not mentioned that I like is Two Friends Bed & Breakfast. P.S. Balkan Supreme, and Larry's Blend are very very good also.

Ha maybe a little. Still in my baccy slut phase. Trying to settle down to a few favorites but every time I do I find a new genre I'm interested in.

Don't get your pipe too wet.

Why do you limit yourself to what your B&M can get...principle? Or do you not like ordering online? Just wondering.

He's new and in a shopping strip I've seen five different businesses come and go in 8 years. Just like to support the local guys on principle. Plus he is like 2.4 miles away from my door. Next nearest one is 40.

If he has accounts and good standing with the local 'bacca reps I'm pretty sure he'll be able to get a good spread of tobacco before too much longer...it's true, buying local helps this. I may head to my Tinder Box tonight for good measure, come to think of it. It's a franchise, and the owners are locals. Same diff.
