I have been smoking pipes for a few years now, I have come here and a few other forums for info over the years especially when i was getting started. Now i know how to use a tamper, how to ream, and all kinda of fun stuff. My favorite pipe is a Peterson Aran 150 with a p-lip but i have 5 others.

I had only owned new pipes so far but I was visiting family in indiana and found a cool pipe holder I wanted at one of those antique stores/flea market things and it happened to come with 6 estate pipes. I came back here to the forum to learn how to clean the oxidation off the vulcanite and find some info about the makers. Anyway, I figured this was a good time to stop lurking and thank the community for the info.

Thanks, I have been able ID all the pipes now. Nothing amazing but they are all in workable condition. No Burnouts or cracked bowls. There was a Dr. Grabow Freehand that is fun looking, haven't smoked it yet. Also two "whitehall" stamped pipes with desisgns carved in the bowl, one with a square shank that I like both cleaned and working well.

Howdy Jeff. Welcome! I love old Whitehall pipes. I've only got five of them but all five are winners. All five smoke cool, dry and sweet right to the heel. I've also got a Grabow freehand that's a good smoker too. I live in Indiana now and prowl flea markets looking for old wood but seldom find any these days. I did find a fifty stick Dunhill humidor for $5. That was a good day.

Welcome Jeff! I also have an estate Whitehall Balmoral smooth briar billiard. I got it on E-Bay and it is a good smoker. Sometimes a pipe without a fancy pedigree is an outstanding pipe just the same. The difference is that it only cost ten bucks but it was cradled like a baby in the hand of a gentleman who loved it before it arrived in your hand. Pipes like your Whitehall carry the history of a man who cared for it and now you add to that manhood history and then it will pass to the next generation so please enjoy it with respect and with pride.

Welcome! Sounds like you made a pretty good find with the estates.

I have thus far only owned new pipes. Something about the idea of a "used pipe" bothered me but now thanks to fellow BoB members I am warming up to estates. ( and will likely dabble in the market in the near future).
