I've found a cinema about an hours drive away from me which has a licensed bar, sofas and armchairs instead of cinema seating and waiter service. It wasn't hard to decide where I will be watching the Hobbit on release day tomorrow! I'm a little jealous of Sweden, for some reason they get to see it today, but at least the UK doesn't have to wait until the 14th like some countries.

Bait bait, bait bait.

In all seriousness though I am really looking forward to it, I loved the LOTR films and I'm hoping for more of the same. It was Tolkien that really got me interested in fantasy when I was young, I had a set of BBC audio books of the Hobbit that were superb. I hope Peter Jackson can make the magic happen again!

Sounds like a sweet place to catch a movie. I'm looking to take the wife and kids to see the film.

my household is going on Saturday, which kinda sucks as that is my pipe making day.

The Hobbit. Three hour prequel where the guy with the ring before the guy with the ring in the 42 hr hiking trip known as the trilogy walks for you guessed it, three hours.

Hey! The only reason I'm planning to go to see this is probably the fact that I have such a huge crush on Richard Armitage. Don't be a hater, size isn't everything... or you know, in the eye of the peeker..... or sumthing like that.... eh.

...if I can use them as an end-table to rest my drinks, beauty truly is in the eye of the beer-holder.

Sounds like an activity during wich "the beauty" can even poke the eye of the beer-holder...

I shall make this post spoiler free... kind of...

I just wanted to note a couple of things:

First off I advise that you SEE THIS IN 2D. My film was in 2d and it was fine, but everyone I know that's seen it in 3D says its really jarring and distracting with the new 48fps shooting. It might be the way of the future, but the way its being done at the moment does not feel right, I'm sure they will fix it eventually but if you love LOTR don't spoil it for yourself in 3D.

Pipes pipes pipes! So many pipes in this film! It's kind of weird seeing them all over in such an anti-smoking world. It has certainly reawakened my desire for a LOTR churchwarden, I've already sent Vauen an enquiry asking if we should be expecting fresh 'Hobbit' licensed pipes. I'll let you know what they say, but I intend not to miss out this time.

CGI smoke... why? I'm sure there are a whole host of dull realistic reasons like health and safety, complications of shooting on a set with smoke on it, teaching actors to light a pipe ect... but damn. Every time I saw the fake smoke rising from a clearly unlit bowl it set my teeth on edge. Also Bilbo kept tamping with his fingers. Unless there is a mysterious churchwarden 'asbestos finger' technique I'm pretty sure somebody needs to get fired for that.

Frog Moreton got its name dropped! Irrelevant but it made me happy.

I think most will probably agree with me when I say the Gollum scenes were the highlight of the film, they are done in an impressively tense and scary way - kind of surprising as we the audience know him quite well by now and shouldn't really have that fear.

My wife dragged me to the midnight premier last night. Good enough movie I guess, but going to work with only three hours of sleep.... ....sorry, I dozed off there... ...huh? Oh yeah, lack of sleep=not good.

Oh and just to make this official, the book was much better. :study:

I finger tamp all the time. Maybe I'm just a 225 pound hobbit. If you're going to brave the fires of Mordor, you'd probably best not be bothered by a little warm ash on your finger.

The family and I caught the 2D version this afternoon. We all really enjoyed it and we're looking forward to the rest of the series.

Aww come on America! I got the reply from Vauen today, I think there might be an error in the grammar from their translation, but you get the idea -

Dear Mr. Johnson,

Thank you very much for your email and your interest in our products - specially in our LOTR pipes.

Due to the anti-smoking campaigns specially in the USA the licence owner of the LOTR products, company Warner Bros., unfortunately decided that the licence for smokeable LOTR pipes had to be discontinued until 31 Dec. 2011. This means that company VAUEN has been able to produce and distribute the LOTR pipes to their dealers and shops only till 31 Dec. 2011..

But of course with regard to the new movie "Hobbit" we have made us some thoughts about - which means that we have planned a "new" edition of this typical pipes for 2013. However these pipes will not be sold under the label "Lord of the Rings" then.

We are sorry to have no better news at the moment!

Best regards,
VAUEN

My wife and I saw the movie and were thoroughly disappointed. While we love the books (LOTR and The Hobbit), we are in no way purists. We went in knowing that PJ would probably change quite a bit. Some of the nonsense he added, like new characters, slapstick 5th grade comedy and so on, made it apparent that he was trying to reach the masses by making the movie something the book never was never ment to be. I won't put in any spoilers, but I will say, I have no desire to see it again.

On a side note, it was terrific to see all the pipes!

yes the pipes and the beards were awesome, the movie was good but not great. Pisses me off that he takes a side note, chandges and turns it into a story line taking up three scenes. For the purpose of stretching he movie into three.

I'm told that the material he added was from extra or later works by Tolkien that had been written around the story... I don't think he actually made it up himself (apart from directorial choices like the slapstick you mentioned). But I agree, the extra material and the decision to take it in a more silly direction doesn't seem to have improved it. Perhaps when it comes to final DVD sets they might take some better choices in editing.
