This Sasieni 5 Dot should be the poster child for badly drilled pipes. The draft hole is so right of center, it makes Rush Limbaugh look like a moderate. When you look down into the shank, you can barely see the hole, as it disappears through the roof of the mortise. I failed in photographing it, because the thing is so big, not much daylight gets down to the bottom of the chamber. I don't know why I care for big, English free hand pipes, because I know it's generally not their forte. But this one? Wow! I know the 5 Dot is not comparable to the "Family Era" standards , but it's hard to believe they didn't scrap this piece.

What's really pathetic is that pipe is not even an especially difficult shape to engineer well.

I second the drill bit! If it's not worth a crap as it is, can't hurt it too bad.

Well, after I publicly slandered this pipe, I decided to actually smoke it (what a novel idea), and it performed...fine. It smoked cool and dry, and was easy to keep lit, no re-lights required. I loaded some Astley's no.99 into it, pressing the tobacco into a ball, and stuffing it into the chamber just below the rim, keeping an air pocket below. I've used that technique with pipes that have deep chambers, and it worked just fine with this one. Hmm, go figure...
It's still an ugly beast though.
