Hello gentlemen,

Having looked around ebay and been into the local B&M I am seriously wanting to by a new pipe. There are some really nice looking Petersons, Savinellis and BCs. At the same time I am starting to focus on Shalom pipes and Shalom era Alphas. However, finding the shape(s) of pipes that really appeal to me is proving to be a challenge. I will still be on the lookout through ebay for the Shalom pipes, but I am really wanting a bent bulldog. ;)

Have been looking at the selection at CupoJoes.com and was wondering if you fine gentlemen would offer some suggestions. :D

Tim, Let me clarify, just to be sure we are all on the same page, I am not a brand new smoker, though I have only been smoking for 3+ months, and this is not my *first* pipe, rather my first *new* pipe. 8)

Though you make a good point and I really should by a cob.

So a Savinelli? They do make a nice looking pipe.

Sorry, guess I didn't interpret "new" right. But still a Savinelli is a good bet: they're good pipes at a reasonable price, and they have a lot of shapes and price points to choose from. I'd guess everyone has at least one in their pipe rack and I've never heard any major complaints and they're a good way to experiment with the kind of bowl you might like w/o breaking the bank.

Tim, no problem. Really looking hard at the Savinellis now that the pipe I was bidding on was just pulled by the seller 3 hours before the end of the auction. Really annoying.

Appreciate the feedback.

For my _first_ pipe I'd get a cob. For my second, I'd get a Savinelli.
kieveryuu, I second Tim's suggestion on a Savinelli if you're interested in a production pipe. If you want something handmade, you can't go wrong with a Moretti by the master craftsman Marco Biagini. While his pipes have been sold at higher bids lately, if you are patient you can still score one of his pipes for around $75 when the timing is right.

Here's a link to his ebay page-

I'm going to throw my support in for Savinelli. You might also consider a Boswell. Not the traditional shapes but great smokers at modest prices, nonetheless.

My first was Savinelli, too. It was followed by several Petersons. You certainly cannot go wrong with either. Both make great pipes at good prices. FWIW, Petersons seem to hold their value a bit better on ebay. So if you think you may resell it down the line you might want to keep that in mind.

I would also suggest you take a look at the Bjarne Viking line (I'm pretty sure the entire line is on sale this month at pipesandcigars.com). They are well made pipes at a good price and they smoke really well.

Peterson
Savinelli
Stanwell
Boswell
Mario Grandi
Misouri Meersham (hey don't knock the cob  )

All are excellent so you can't go wrong. Of course its hard to advise you on which ones LOOK the best since style is so predicated on personal preference.

If you feel like supporting another forum goer, my buddy Jay sells on Ebay as cigarstorejay. He just received a bunch of new Savinellis as well as a few of some crazy expensive pipe brand I've never heard of.

If you had asked this question as I did over 40 years ago, the answer would have been "... get a Comoy's or GBD" as they made some of the nicest smoking and offered a wide price range of quality to choose from. Today I would have to put Savanelli in their place as I feel they have one of the widest range of styles, quality and price range of just about ANY production pipe manufacturers today. I have many Savanelli's in my collection ranging from less than $40.00 new up to some Guibleo de Oro and Erica Fiamme straightgrains and ALL are some of the BEST smoking pipes I have. Take a good look at 'em, I'm sure you'll find one to fit your needs. :)

A few "honorable mentions" to this list are:

Nording
Neerup
Bjarne Viking

If you carefully select, you can get a good deal and a good pipe.

Very much appreciate the information and suggestions. Will post pictures of whatever pipe I end up getting.

Read more than a couple people say they're a bitch to break in. Not your experience?

Mine was tough to break in. I think it is young/poorly aged or cured briar., Just took forever to get a smooth smoke. Just my 2¢ of course.

I was about to post Savenilli, Stanwell, and Peterson. Storm beat me to it. So Nording came to mind but Kyle beat me to that. All I can suggest is what everyone else suggested. A sandblast will bring the price down to around 60 bucks if price is an issue.
