What a downer this guy is...I love him, but seriously - what a downer. I've always loved Jude the Obscure and Far from the Madding Crowd - sad, fatalistic, and miserable as they are. I thought to myself, "surely he can't always write like this...he MUST have something a bit less depressing, right?"

Then I opened Tess of the d'Urbervilles.


Woof.


At some point or another, I've wanted to crawl into this book and fight almost every major character (and a few of the minor ones, too). I mean, it's a great book for sure - but MAN is it a rough ride.
 
Having read Tess, I can wholeheartedly agree. I read it once and that was quite enough for me.
 
Have you read A Prayer For Owen Meany? Hardy and Tess is mentioned frequently.
