Ok, once again, after much searching through the interwebs, I turn to (in)direct questioning of real people.

The pipe: A Trypis bent bulldog ebay estate purchase - a really nice pipe that reminds me that I need add photos of my new pipes to the gallery.

The question: This pipe is stamped “1255” (in addition to “Trypis”), do any of you know what information these numbers are supposed to impart? Have learned a lot about Trypis pipes in my investigation, just not how the pipes are coded.

Your help is appreciated.

Excellent idea, looked at their information earlier, have now contacted them.

Will see what they say, thank you.

Well, having taken Rusty’s advice, I contacted Stefan and I have pasted his reply below:

“Phillips pipes haven't changed much over the decades so it is always difficult to place them exactly. The number stamp is more than likely a shape and grade marker. He did no [sic] stamp any of his later pipes with a shape number, just a grade number that I asked him to use. They ranged from 2 to 10 ($35 to $300). The age of this pipe will depend on the date of its original purchase. It could have been made anytime from the early 1970s after he left Brigham to the late 1980s when Phillip got out of the pipe making business for a while and got into home building. I can tell you that the pipe is in very good condition aside from the stem oxidization and should clean up well. In current day grading, the pipe you have there would be in a grade 4 or 5 range ($55 to $70) range.“

Good information. Am one of those who likes to know as much as possible about each pipe in my collection.

Will post pictures of the refurbished pipe when I get a chance to finish it.
