Just wanted to see what y'all thought of Vauen pipes. I've got me a hankering for one from smokingpipes, and don't see them mentioned here very often.

Did a search and found one old thread which had one good recommendation, yet wanted to get some fresh perspectives.

TIA

Cheers,

RR

I just took a look at them, and for that kind of money, which, admittedly, is not all that large, I'd rather get a Peterson or a Stanwell, which to me are known quantities. I have heard of Vauen, but infrequently. Perhaps this make has had a rocky history, being made here and there, or lack of funds has stopped production? You would think that is the case as in this price range all the maker has to do is produce a good smoker.

One of the guys on here is a fan of Vauen. I remember seeing something about them, don't remember what... aren't they made in Germany? That in and of itself is pretty cool.

Here's a post from one of our members from a separate thread. This is not the one I was thinking of, but I stumbled upon it while looking for it.

I have several of their pipes, from the $75 to $100 price range you mention to two of their higher grades ($300 range), including one of the Lord of the Rings pipes they made when the movies came out. IMHO they are all well made pipes and dollar for dollar I would put them in the same category as Sav's, Stanwells, Peterson's and Jirsa's when comparing pipes in the same price range. The drilling is very good and they do a nice job on the finishing. All of the ones I own are very good smokers with minimum break in period.

I've got a few.. and honestly said I prefer them over Peterson.. I have 3 or 4 Petes and the Vauens smoke better.. last year I was given their Mozart Pipe...I only smoke it every once in a while but it is one of my favorites.

A few years back he made a 75th anver pipe for the Tinderbox. I loved them and asked my friend who ran a shop if he could order one for me. I was shiping out to Iraq in a month and wanted to get it before I left. They was not on the market at that time and would not be out for another two months after I left. My friend contacted him and before I new it I hade a pipe stamped 2 of 75 and a message from him saying thank you for my service and this great pipe. I love it smokes great, most if not all use a filter which I dont use but it smokes fine without it.
Best Regards
Richard

I own three and one is in my usual rotation, the other are occasional pipes. What attracted me to them a while back was being German, and as Germans seem to love their 9mm filters, they make a large selection of pipes that use those filters. So when I wanted to add a few more of those types of pipes, they offered a lot of variety at a decent price.

The one I like the most is too small, has a horrible red color and is way too heavy in shiny varnish, but smokes like a dream!

Well, they are certainly handsome pipes. I might get one or two now that I have seen the website. Thanks for the link, too.

I still highly recommend them. From my understanding they are one of the oldest European pipe makers. I never had any problems in breaking them in when new. Unfortunetly I can't say the same with some of the Peterson's I have bought (mainly the thick coat of stain inside the bowl).

These posts are all very informative and appreciated. If the pipe I fancy is still there in a week or so I'll likely go for it. Holidays and all ya know....

Not like I really need another pipe, but you know how that goes!
