I was in Memphis yesterday and stopped in at the Tinderbox at WolfChase Mall. Great people running the place, very knowledgeable and pleasant. I saw a couple of pipes I really liked that were called Viking classic and that was all. I figured it was an expensive basket pipe but the lady behind the counter told me it was a Bjarne low-end line that was really good on the tobacco and the pocket.

Any of you guys know about this?

The ones I saw at Tinder Box looked different from those pictures. I went to the standard web sites but none of the pictures matched what I saw. Which got me to wondering about these. The one I saw was a beautiful small billiard with a silver band and excellent markings. The manager of the store couldn't say enough good things about them.

hey man.. I frequent this store a good bit.. and the young lady that works there is big on the Bjarne' pipes and I think I know what pipe you are talking about, they got a few in that series in a couple months back, and they are nice pipes for the price. Not to sway you away, but next time your in town, travel 10 minutes south down the road and hit up Tobacco Corner, They just got some nice $50 pipes, some Chacoms and some new Nordings, from what I was told. Im gonna try to make a trip up there this weekend.

My experience with Bjarne pipes has been less than stellar. I have two, one is noisy on the draw and sometimes I'm not sure if I'm smoking a pipe or playing a pennywhistle. The other is so poorly drilled I can't get a pipe cleaner from stem to the bowl. I have relegated them to be used on those rare occasions I get the jones for an aromatic tobacco. I'm not going to buy another Bjarne any time soon. That said, your mileage may very.

Ok. I'll try both of them and see what pans out. I don't get up to Memphis very much but this sounds like a great reason to go. I looked at the website and only saw Savinellis. I assume they have a good selection of pipes.

I have a Bjarne Viking Classic that I guess would be described as not quite a full billiard but not short enough to qualify as a nosewarmer that I picked up about 5 years ago. I noticed it does whistle a bit when empty, but mine actually does smoke pretty well. It's certainly no Ashton but a decent smoker, and surprisingly light. I suspect with pipes like this results may vary (though my lower end Nordings both smoke extremely well).

Ashton's are known to whistle a bit too, I can attest to that! Just gives me a charming image of Bill Taylor deciding which scotch to pour before cutting the stem! I love Ashton pipes!

I have three Ashtons, one of which has an irregularly shaped bowl, which I love; I also have a stacked billiard with shows 32 consecutive blasted rings.

For the price, they are laden with value.

Jimmy Craig, the guy making them now is turning out a product more or less identical to the pipes Bill Ashton Taylor made, or at least that's what my untrained eye sees.

I like there Bjarne Viking Classic Pot

I just bought a Bjarne Copenhagen light pipe in the pot shape last week...I smoked some Frog Morten in it the other night and it smoked great. For the price i feel they are definately a good buy.

One of mine is a Bjarne Viking Classic, I guess you could call it a bent apple style. I don't have a lot of smoking experience so I may not be the best reference but I love that pipe. It seems to smoke better every time I use it (3-4 times a week). I think I paid somewhere between $50-$60 for mine, and for that price I think it's a great little pipe

Here's the one I have
