Hello all, just found this place a day or two ago. Nice.
I'm a longtime cigarette smoker, and have loved a good cigar occasionally for most of that time, and really got into the cigars big time again a couple years ago. Got into RYO recently due to the insane cost of cigarettes now and also having a lot more time on my hands (and less funds at the same time) after being laid off a few months ago.

Anyway a week or two ago I'm at the local shop I get my RYO baccy at and grabbed a MM corncob and a pouch of PA on a whim.

I LIKE THIS! Hell, I might be able to stop smoking cigs, I'm already down to 6 or 8 a day from a pack or so (20+). Of course that's with burning about 4 or 5 bowls in a cob.
I picked up another cob a few days later and a pouch of CB White, it's OK too but I like the PA better.
Anyway, thanks for having me, lots of good info for a newbie here.
So I'm looking at pre loved pipes on ebay and such, I'm in the Raleigh, NC area if anyone knows of any likely places to look scrounging for estates please let me know.
Thanks, John.

Hey there. I bought a pipe down in the Raleigh area a few years back... Of course I can't remember the name of the place. I'll talk to my cousin who lives down there though. Maybe he'll recall.

Welcome to the BoB! I'm down in sunny, Sanford, NC. Always good to see another NC'er on the BoB!

Welcome, and don't feel like an outsider. It seems a lot (most?) of the crowd here were once cigarette smokers that morphed into a more satisfying and cultured form of smoking.

welcome to the "dark side"!!!!!!!!
I too cant' resit that cigarette habit!!!

Howdy and welcome to BoB! Hopefully you'll find that smoking a pipe is not as habit forming as cigs. The addiction/disorder will be buying pipes and pipe tobacco, aka PAD and TAD.

Hey john! this is a great place to be, especially if you're a newbie. lots of experience here.

Welcome John,

I am also in the Raleigh Metro. The best place around here is Pipes by George:

1209 Hillsborough Street
Raleigh, NC 27603-1507
(919) 829-1167

You could also go to JR in Smithfield or Burlington, depending on which place is closer. They are a bigger place with lots of cigars too. You don't get the personal service like you do with George.

You should also come to the Triangle Area Pipe Smokers (TAPS) meetings at Duffy's on Falls of Neuse Rd. 6 PM every 2nd Tuesday of the month. Unfortunately, I have to miss this month's meeting, but maybe we can catch up for a smoke there one of these days (or, just outside there, thanks to the new smoking ban). Justpipes also gets out there a bit, but don't worry - he doesn't push the Walnut too much :)

Thanks all for the welcome!
Well friends and neighbors, I actually just got back from Pipes by George. I had been there once before a year or two ago but of course I was only interested in cigars at the time. I've been to JR's a few times too but same thing, don't remember a lot of pipe stuff but of course I wouldn't really have noticed.

I picked up a very pretty little piece of briar today out of George's "basket" stuff. No name just stamped CZECH but pretty anyway. Spent more than I meant to of course. George was great! VERY helpful and tolerant of my newbieness. He has a nice little shop full of goodies. Gave me free sample tobacco to try on my way out even. Can't say enough about how great an experience he makes it for a first timer.

Thanks again for having this place to learn about the pipe.

Yes I just read about TAPS last night on these forums, I always join a new club a little late for the good stuff! I read the threads about the big deal yall had in April I missed out on of course. But I'll definitely make it to one of those monthly get togethers soon, thanks for the invite!
As I posted above I've been to the JR's in Selma, cigar heaven! And George is da man.

Glad to hear George treated you right. He's a good guy. I even brought my 2 little daughters in there once, and he entertained them with empty cigar boxes!

The April thingy is the annual TAPS show. Hopefully they'll do it again this year. It seems a lot of work to put on, but some solid brothers get it done every year I've been here.

Hopefully we'll meet up soon at Duffy's!
