If 666 is the evil number, which number is the "good" number?
Well, the post was mainly in jest. However, I have done a bit of research into the Christian Mysteries, the Kabbalic Mysteries, Hermetic Science, Mysticism, and the such like and have found that numbers have significance to all of them and to numbers are attributed specific principles and while one number may be thought of as being evil to some groups to other groups it could in fact be holy... it really all lies in ones perception. :D

The honors go to cciaffone for being our 666th member!

Doesn't look like he'll be sticking around though.

I am an old geezer in south Durham. I have a box

to unload. Not looking for big bux. Email me at

That's his first post so it doesn't sound like he's a pipe smoker. Oh well.

I'm just glad his handle wasn't satan..........

When I was in college, my number was 666-####. My Chinese Prof just loved that for me. She said that is the luckiest number, and then she found out that my baseball # was 44 which was terribly unlucky... Seems like a bunch of junk to me

The number you really don't want in Chinese is #78... it sounds just like the slang term for "penis." (Odd circumstance for a country with several million Wangs walking around.)

I find it interesting how every culture has it's lucky and unlucky numbers. For many Western cultures, it's the Biblical 666 or 13 in the US. In China the number 4 and 14 are considered quite unlucky. Several buildings in Shanghai had no 4th or 14th floor on the elevator buttons. A few of the "upscale" hotels that catered to Westerners had no 4th, 13th, or 14th floor buttons (covering all the "superstition" bases I guess).

The street kiosks where you could buy cellphones and select your own phone number would have hundreds of sheets of available numbers, and if they had any 4 in them at all, it was just one, and hidden in the middle. I asked one of the sellers if I could get the number 444-4444 and his eyes grew big, he stepped back, and asked why anyone would want that number. We laughed after he understood that I was just inquiring, and he said, sure, you could have that number in any phone exchange in the country. But why, he added, no one would ever call you.

Natch #444-413-6664

777
My understanding ((from my previous life) studying this from a evangelical, literalist, conservative, christian background) is that the number 6 represents the number of man and the triple six is a copy of the trinity. Many also believe the number 7 to be the number of perfection or God and so the Holy Trinity would be represented by 777. The Unholy trinity would then be 666.

That was my understanding too......I wouldn't buy a pipe from 666 though.....no way dude

666 is the mark of the Beast. Read Revelations and it will tell you a lot about it. The Bible is a great book if you read it and take the time to understand it or at least try too. Its well worth it!!

My understanding is that the number should be six [(to the sixth power) to the sixth power], not 666. I think it will be a while until we reach that number.
We are talking about 46,656 raised to the sixth power, I don't have a calculator that will handle that many digits, let alone enough fingers & toes. Suffice it to say its larger than a Democratic bail out budget... :lol!:

This is how it's written:
Revelation 13:18 (New American Standard Bible)
18 Here is wisdom Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for the number is that of a man; and his number is six hundred and sixty-six.

Or for the hardcore.
Revelation 13:18 (King James Version)
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

I guess this debate has gone on since it was written.

It's a fascinating literary mystery that's been further complicated by translations between multiple languages, each of which belonged to a culture that had its own numerological beliefs. It's possible that the number was gematria [a letter-number cipher] referring to a politcally sensitive subject of the era--the Emperor Nero is a leading guess.

The Revelation of John was written in the Greek of the era, at a time when many early Christians spoke Latin, Aramaic, Berber, etc. Not to mention that literacy was anything but widespread, and documents were copied longhand, leading to countless opportunities for problematic copies and translation. Some scholars say that the "actual" Number of the Beast is 616.

My scholarly opinion is that The Number of the Beast is one of Maiden's best albums. "Run to the Hills" is a classic!
