I probably should have included one or two of these with my better ones.

First a Picture of all of the best of the rest, LOL!

Then This is probably the better of this group. Bottom Right is a Cesare Barontini and the one above it is a Prince of Wales and on the right both are Tinder Box Verona and all these made in Italy.

Then here are my 2nd's I posted about..

If that is a GBD, which I think it is based on the rondelle, it's a most unusual shape. Is it a Unique?

Brother Skip, your second and third "class" pipes are beautiful too!! I especially like the 3/4 bent bulldog. I've recently learned that my old Wally Frank bulldog is a wonderful "test" pipe!

But, I am very, very partial to the one that in the first picture is the second one from the top on the far left side and is the top one in the second picture. It has a goldish yellow stem with a slight bend in it. I love that pipe!! What kind is it??

Thank you for taking the time to share the pics with us!!!

BTW, did you get anything done on those "Bream Slayers?" The curiosity is about to kill me!!!

Robert

First the Cherry wood one is a ROPP and I first bought is as a novelty, but have smoked it some, but not much.

Robert that pipe says Prince of Wales made in Italy and the stem has some kind of mark imprinted on it, but that is all I remember. It is a really nice looking pipe, but don't think it was in the same boat as say a Caminetto. I don't remember if I bought it at a Tinder Box or not, but think I bought it in Houston in 1980. I like the smooth and rough finish together like that.
Here is a picture of the mark, but I have no clue about it.

Skip, sorry I can't help you any more with identifying the manufacturer. She's a beautiful pipe. I hate to hear that she's not the quality of the Caminetto. As beautiful as the Caminetto is, why were you considering getting rid of it?? Is she a bad smoker or something?? If so, that would be extremely sad... she's got some gorgeous wood grain!!! ;)

Robert

Actually it's just not been smoked enough and that is mostly because it's a deep pretty large bowl of me. However saying that I smoked it a few time lately and it has really shown me something and now I like it a lot. I guess when I bought it they were saying that Caminetto didn't make many smooth mustache and I paid a lot more for it than any I have. I think it was about $280 way back in the mid 1970's and the other Caminetto's were much less and under $100. I think one of the early ones I have was $95 and the other was maybe $75-$85. I think it's kind of a big deal that it's Smooth Mustache and has all the names on it.

I did pay a good bit for that Auto Micoli and the 2 large Jobey's were not cheap either, but I am pretty sure that Mustache was the highest cost one for me. I really love the wood on it to. Just beautiful and now smokes like it. Also back then you or I didn't see any Caminetto's that were not dark or black with some swirls in them, but this one is kind of dirty blond or gold.

If I had to guess and that is what it would be, but that one you like was probably $65-$85 in 1980 I think.

The 2nd's smoke great and cost about $20-$25 back then. I see now their 2nd's (different Mfg.) are $35 and I would have to think the older ones are better pipes.

Skip
PS I was extremely happy the smoking it turned around in the last 3 days. Some of my pipes have not been smoked enough to be broke in good and that was one. Even though I had smoked it a little, not enough.

Skip, I'm quite please that your relationship with your pipe(s) is getting better. It's got to be frustrating to have such a beautiful tool and not enjoy using it... especially when it wasn't a cheap tool!!

You said something about $35 for 2nds from another manufacturer. Where are you finding seconds now? I don't have a tobacconist close to me to check out any 2nds. And, if there are places like that online, I would be interested in perusing their selections and doing a bit of drooling!! :D

Robert

Robert this is a web site for one of the Tinder Box stores and this one I believe is in Louisiana near N.O.
I have spoke with them one time, but can't remember what name they said, but one of their brands are 2nd's and $35 each.

That's a nice collection Skip!
Thank you and I have a couple in this group that I probably smoke as much as the other thread with my better ones. However I really like the Caminetto's (& I have to add in the Micoli) best so enjoy them a lot. Just happy I bought them so long ago.

Robert I have been trying some jigs for the Blue Gills and tied these 3 so far and I just wanted to try what materials I had in mind, only need to try other way of using these same materials. So far the best are the most costly to make. When you look at this picture the one on the left is just regular (Chartreuse) Squirrel and I thought the skin was too think for a small jig like this, but still liked it. However when I it in a glass of water to see what happens it kept flared out like this looks. It does slim down when taken out of the water, but open back when put back in.

The 2 on the right...the top one is (Brown) Pine Squirrel and looks great and in the water is better so closes some and when stopped it opens up just a bit. Kind of same with the bottom right one which is (Olive) mink and probably the most action. What I did learn it the regular squirrel will kill the crappie early spring or just before they move in because it's a little stiff and that seems to be best at that time. I still must tie a few more using them different to see what is what. I also need to see if I can get the mink and Pine squirrel for less than retail which I had to pay for what I have. This stuff is high because you just don't get much in a pack if mink and the pine squirrel is the full skin already cut, but at about $15 per each it's high. This is a small squirrel.

At any rate tell me what you think, but know I would start the mink one a little farther back to cover the hook a little better, but it's so thin cut there is not a lot I can do. Almost forgot to say there are 1/32 Oz. with #8 Sickle hooks.

Thanks for the link, Skip! I've only had time to quickly glance through the site. And, I've not found any of the $35 pipes. But, I'll check closer when I've got a bit more time.

The bream jigs look great. It's really too bad that the chart squirrel doesn't have more action to it. The other two look like killers. But, as you pointed out, it would be nice if more of the hook was disguised... especially on the mink one. But, you can only do what the materials allow you to do.

I just had a thought concerning the mink one and disguising the hook better. In an attempt to move the mink back a bit further and not "harm" the appeal of the jig, how do you think it would work to use some of your "special" string to create a short body, then add the mink? I don't have the talent and imagination that you do. So, I don't know. It was just a thought.

The bream pond that I love to fish has lots and lots of underwater brush that was added by the property owner. As is usual with the bream, they made their homes among it. With all these hidden snags, I wonder... is it possible to add a "hook guard" (for lack of a better term) to make the jig less likely to hang up; yet still be fairly easy to set once a fish strikes it? The kind of "hook guard" that I have seen before would be some strands of some type of stiff nylon that extends back and "protects" the hook from easily catching on sticks and such. Again, it is something that might not work well. I don't know. That's why I'm seeking guidance from the "master!"

Great work, brother Skip! I look forward to you getting the jigs done like you want them and me being able to get some and give them a try next spring!! ;)

BTW, you were talking about the expense involved in the mink... how much would you have to sell them for if you had to use the same material and supplier that you used to make the one in the picture?

Robert

Just have a few minutes right now, but just want to tell you that calling that store may be what you need to do and ask them what name their 2nd's go under. I talked to them the other day and they told me buy I forgot. Sorry about that.

Anyway I know they have some and that the price is $35.

Will get back on rest later, sorry!

No problem, brother Skip! I understand that I am not the most important "thing" in your life. If I were, you'd have an awfully dull and boring life... not to mention that you'd be poorer than Old Job's turkey!!!

Robert... patiently waiting in the wings!! :D

Robert just have not felt great the last couple days and still had so many jig to tie I am swamped with well over 1000 I need to do in the next couple weeks. Plus had a Doc apt. Tuesday and it's 70 miles each way to him and I got hot under the collar and walked out just before he was getting to me. I was hungry and knew my blood sugar was going lower as time did. I take pills so have to eat at right time. Told them to make me another apt for next year as I left. I guess him as a heart doc thinks his time is valuable, but I will tell him right now that for me my time is just as important as his is so don't make me wait 2 hours ever again or will leave again.

Anyway back to the little jigs and weed guards, I don't have or make any like that, First I powder paint the heads which means they get cured in the oven at near 400 F. for roughly 15 minutes. Then if metal I can't imagine how you would tie one with that in the way. So in long version I don't do any weed guards. I do recommend for some that are worried about hang ups and losing jigs. Use Power Pro Braid line in 10/2 so you can most likely pull it off the snag and then just bend the hook back.

I am so far behind,

Hope you feel better Skip!
good luck with all the tying, I don't know how you do it.
By the time I have tied 10 patterns sometimes all the same I am pretty beat!

Well Piet I have one order that has 10 colors with 3 sizes each color and 4 packs of 4 each (or 480 jigs). I have some with candy colors and you get a different color for each candy color depending on what you paint over it. Example I have 2 of them using candy Orange and candy Orange over a plain lead head come out a bit on the Burnt Orange side and over a Gold Plated head it's a Bright orange that is really nice and way different.

I just did the 1/32 size that is supposed to be the Burnt Orange side and I tied the wrong heads so have to paint 16 more and re-tie them all. I now have 16 1/32oz. jig to be sold at next years Volunteer Fire Dept here. I am so mad at my self for doing that I just can't stand it when I do something so stupid. At least most of the time I catch that fast enough to just have to re-paint one or two, but no I did them all.

Worst part is I tied the one with the green body on the one that is supposed to have a silver body so can't fake it either, LOL!

yes I too get burnt out tying the same jig a lot, but it also help with time taken to tie a bunch when I don't have to change color feathers and such.
