Sometimes when I'm smoking my pipe and I get close to the bottom of the bowl I find that I don't want the pleasure to end right away but I know there's only a few minutes of tobacco left. I've been tempted to add another pinch to the bowl to extend the smoke. Has anyone else ever had this experience and did you add another pinch of tobacco to the bowl? Did you light the new tobacco from the top or let it catch from the bottom? How did it taste? Is this something you wouldn't recommend? Why? What do you do to extend a pleasurable smoke?

As always your thoughts based on your experience is appreciated.

Back when I started smoking I tried re-loading a pipe with some more of the same 'bac to continue the pleasurable smoke I was having, but never was able to get the same taste a smoking level as i could with another bowl of the same 'bac in ANOTHER pipe ! Never could get it to burn properly if the previous bowl was still lit and the taste was really not the same as I was smoking thru the burn't ash of the bowl before. Tried it a few times and never since

I use the technique in breaking in a pipe, so I will do this 3 or 4 times until I feel I have my briar seasoned.

Doing this can make it harder to smoke all the way to the bottom of a bowl, but that is exactly why I like doing it during the break in period.

Yay, more "Yes" and "No" content from me.

Yes, I have done this. Some pipes and tobaccos respond well to it, others do not. I find with cobs it ends up working okay. I suspect it has something to do with the fact cobs have a pretty wide-open bore in regard to the airway...the more stuff you put on top of already compacted ash is only going to increase the chances of clogging (or a mouthful of ash). The taste has been alright. In other pipes, it doesn't taste as good. Provided you're already buzzing pretty good on some nicotine from the first bowl, you might not even notice the flavor change/decrease, and also might be too settled to bother getting up and packing a different pipe... <img class="emojione" alt="?" title="" src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/emojione/assets/png/1f937.png?v=2.2.7"/>

No, I don't do it often. For obvious reasons--it changes the taste. I'm pretty into specific, subtle and/or dynamic flavors. Therefore, I don't recommend it as practice or even a regular thing with those who are curious about it--you'd do better to simply get larger-capacity bowls if you find yourself wanting more by the time all is said and done. Then again, the finishing-while-wanting-more and keeping that yearning (until next time) as part of the experience can be quite enjoyable, too.

Couldn't you just finish what's in the bowl empty out the ash then re pack

You could, but that last third of tobacco is holding all the moisture from burning the first 2/3rds. Once you burn that last third, the moisture has nowhere to go, except into your briar. With the additional moisture already in your briar, your tongue will have to absorb most of the moisture from the second bowl.

The best formula, is a clean dry pipe, burning one bowl 3/4th's and leaving the last fourth. You can experiment with different strategies, but nothing beats having several quality pipes in your rotation, and cleaning them on a regular basis. This is exactly the mentality behind a seven day set, which allows a one pipe per day rotation.

Of course, some pipes are excellent performers, and you may be able to get multiple smokes between rests, but if your tongue is burned and fatigued, look at giving your pipes a cleaning and more importantly a rest for several days.

I've tried it with no better results than those described by the gennermens above.

What? I'm not giving up my last 1/4 "dregs," that's my favorite part!

(...seriously!) (...it's delicious!)

Not to mention you'll have an if not foul at least sub-par tasting pipe after a while. Dry the swamp out with heat from smoking when there is one.

A dry pipe is a happy pipe. 8)

:face:

No wonder I have few moisture problems... I'm baking out the heat to the bottom, and letting the desert take care of any potential swamps. Makes sense.

I was just after that intense bottom-of-the-bowl flavor. :D

I like it too, but I have found smoking to the absolute bottom is where most of the tongue bite occurs for me. If I wasn't bothered by it, I would definitely smoke every last drop of moisture until the bowl sizzled.
