Howdy all,

I bought an Estate Pete Pipe online, but havent gotten it yet.
I noticed in the pic, that it had a screen in the bottom of the bowl.

I was just wondering, do any of you use screens?
Are there certain applications where you do and or dont?
Or is it just a preference thing , that doesnt really matter one way or the other?

Oh , and BTW, I sure learned alot from keeping up with JM's thread about cleaning pipes.

Thanks
Dusty

Screens? Umm... maybe in that metal pipe I used in high school. :drunken:

Yeah, I thought screens were only for that other kind of tobacco, the mexican kind....?

kind of allieviates the need to build up a heel cake though, might be onto something.

Seriously though dusty, if your new pipe smells really strange, that will probably explain a lot.

Thought about getting a couple to try myself...maybe I need to luck into it!

I would imagine screens would mar the inside of the bowl with packing, scraping and cleaning... the edges of those screen are not soft and fuzzy. The screen itself would also need to be removed a lot and either cleaned and replaced, which means more bowl scarring... I can't see the point of a screen except extra nuisance. Gonna stick with the old-fashioned way, myself. 8)

LOL, Great!

Now you guys have me worried.
Dang! I hope it wasnt used for the other type.

It was on the auction site, and a pawn shop buddy told me to look for "mispelled" items , so I did, and found this Pete that nobody was bidding on.
it was mispelled, but the makers marks were there on the nickel band.
They must have read it as " petehsons" because thats how it was posted.
LOL, hopefully whoever put it up for auction wasnt smoking it prior, with an illegal blend, therefore the reason for the mis spell.

GREAT ! Oh well, I'll know when it gets here

:D Dusty

The "misspelled" technique only works very few times... often you'll find someone who probably has little knowledge of what they're selling is at the helm....

If it reeks of something very un-tobacco like, you'll know. I've heard it ruins the pipe, so I hope, very much so, that isn't the case. :(

Be careful about screens. You didnt mention it being old or not. I got a old WDC awhile back that had a screen and upon removal I realized it was asbestose . Didnt use it but after restoring and sanitizing the old pipe. It was a good one

yep, its old,,and well used, the rim is charred, and I just looked at the pic again , and the screen looks to be wire, old craggly wire.

i dont know, I guess I kind of got carried away, and didnt pay that much attention to what I was bidding on.

Dont get discouraged, I removed the screen from mine. and she was a great pipe. I through the screen away and kept the pipe. She was like a peterson 317. My son liked it and ended up talking me out of it. Like I said in the above post I clean and sterilize my ebay finds. Some take alot of tender loving care but the end results are rewarding.
