GrampaGrossbart...loved that Dutch tale.
What to do with my pipes when I go Home is an interesting question and deserves some thought. I've never asked my boys if they'd want them - or a couple of them - for a keep sake. It's a quandary in my house. I've always promoted good health and not smoking to my boys but I find it somewhat pleasurable and contemplative myself. I love the tactile experience of certain pipes. My wife enjoys the room note of some of the tobaccos. I've never lit up, and would likely be a bit embarrassed to in front of my boys although I'm certain they know I enjoy a pipe here and there. I do have a good friend whom I enjoy a good pipe with as we solve the world's problems. I imagine my boys might want one each but I very much doubt they'll light them up and remember me while smoke curls up from the bowl the way I remember my Dad when I light up. My Dad smoked a pipe but switched to cigarettes, which I never understood. When I was 16 or so, after he had switched off pipes, I used to sneak his short little falcon from his collection of 8 or 10 and and take it camping. I loved the ghost odors of tobaccos past in his pipes but never quite knew what they were ( Three Nuns, St. Brunos and/or one of the Sails). He had a lovely old Peterson System pipe in it's own case that I coveted, but sometime after he had said I could have his collection, in a moment of dementia, he gave it to my nephew who will never use it - at least not for tobacco. But I did get his other pipes, most of which are burn outs but they sit beside my favorite chair and I pick them up and fondle them when Dad come to mind. Two will get refurbished at Dad's Pipes and I may test them out.
I have a bit of a collection, probably 30, mostly pre- 90's Brighams but maybe only 6 or so that I rotate through - which takes a while as I don't smoke daily but rather in fits and starts, more in the fall sometimes not at all through the summer. I have a number that are unsmoked and likely won't be; my Nording Hunters, a couple of Trypis' and a Brigham Sportsman. On second thought, maybe I should at least break those in - but I've wandered from the question.
I imagine I will find someone who appreciates the Brigham history and gift them. I do like the idea of distributing some to a BoB member. That would ensure they are appreciated. More thought and preparation required on this.
