...what is going to happen to your pipes?  Do you have a plan for someone to take them and either sell them or give them to relatives, or what?  This bothers me a lot. I'm not sure what I'm going to do if the "PG" happens.(hopefully not for many years yet).    No wise ass comments please.  I'm just curious how you would handle this.

I've never really thought about it. In fact, I don't think there's a single person in my family who would be interested in them. Something to think about.

Yep, now is the time for you to pick out someone who will use them and add it into your will, otherwise they will likely get tossed or taken to Goodwill. The things you cherish are worthless to your relatives.

I'm hoping I've got this one covered.

My son who is a young teen is already proving to be quite nostalgic and sentimental - much like his dad! He quite likes it when I fire up a pipe and often asks about it. Of course, I do gently discourage him and hope he doesn't ever take up any form of smoking activity. That said, it'd also be nice to share a cigar or a pipe with him if he so chose. Oh the conflict!

So, I recon when I slip my mortal moorings he'll take up the mantle, even if it's only to keep them boxed up and safe.

My kids and grandkids will probably divvy up whatever pieces they want for nostalgia purposes, sell the tinned tobacco for spending money, and burn the rest with my old body.

“pieces”...OH, you mean pipes. I thought...well, never mind.

Well said mate, well said indeed.

My late Pap smoked a pipe as long as my memory holds, and whilst he gave it up in his last years he seemed to be supportive of my decision to take it up. I only wish I could have been able to take ownership of his very modest collection of pipes. Those would all certainly have tales to tell!

Cheers,

RR

I would suggest that people make arrangements with someone here to receive their pipes to be passed on to others here on the BoB. If you guys families are anything like mine only a small handful of pipes will stay within your family as a momento. Odds are the rest would be thrown away or dumped at goodwill. So why not arrange for them to go to good homes

Just a thought
Jim

I’ve been selling pipes that are near duplicates, or are too big or too small, or I haven’t smoked much lately. The strategy is to thin the herd thereby simplifying the final distribution. I have a suspicion the effort could be futile.

I'd advocate that, Jim, too.

Not a pleasant topic to discuss but sadly and parodoxically, apart from taxes, the only certainty in life

My wife has directions to send all to one particular pipe shop with a note of thanks for a lifetime of pleasure. If she goes before me, well, I cross that bridge then.

Guys, bring all of it along with you. As you'll end up in my locker, you'll be able to enjoy it. I have an outstanding fumoir that has a killer underwater view. :lol!:

I just read the following passage in an old guide to the Netherlands that provides one example we might follow:

Proost!

I asked this question many years ago on this forum...was told at the time "nobody wants your crap"...off putting to say the least...well, I solved the problem...been giving away pipes that I hold dear to me...yes, dear to me. I gave away my Comoys to a friend that I developed here...gave him about 10 of them including my Blue Riband. Since then about 6 years has passed...we still communicate daily, yes daily, that is how close we became. I've never met the gentleman, yet consider him my brother. Now I don't have concerns about what little tobacco I have and what pipes I have left. They will all go to him and perhaps another friend that I've developed...so the question of what will happen has been solved...and I have 2 "new" friends.

Now that's the way to do it. I'm of the age that I'm wondering about my accumulation of things and where they will end up too. I have vintage motorcycles, flintlock rifles and of course my pipes...probably near 50 of them or so. I've often thought about finding a relatively young person with a passion for any of my pursuits and to begin 'gifting.' Hard to really decide to do though.

GrampaGrossbart...loved that Dutch tale.

What to do with my pipes when I go Home is an interesting question and deserves some thought. I've never asked my boys if they'd want them - or a couple of them - for a keep sake. It's a quandary in my house. I've always promoted good health and not smoking to my boys but I find it somewhat pleasurable and contemplative myself. I love the tactile experience of certain pipes. My wife enjoys the room note of some of the tobaccos. I've never lit up, and would likely be a bit embarrassed to in front of my boys although I'm certain they know I enjoy a pipe here and there. I do have a good friend whom I enjoy a good pipe with as we solve the world's problems. I imagine my boys might want one each but I very much doubt they'll light them up and remember me while smoke curls up from the bowl the way I remember my Dad when I light up. My Dad smoked a pipe but switched to cigarettes, which I never understood. When I was 16 or so, after he had switched off pipes, I used to sneak his short little falcon from his collection of 8 or 10 and and take it camping. I loved the ghost odors of tobaccos past in his pipes but never quite knew what they were ( Three Nuns, St. Brunos and/or one of the Sails). He had a lovely old Peterson System pipe in it's own case that I coveted, but sometime after he had said I could have his collection, in a moment of dementia, he gave it to my nephew who will never use it - at least not for tobacco. But I did get his other pipes, most of which are burn outs but they sit beside my favorite chair and I pick them up and fondle them when Dad come to mind. Two will get refurbished at Dad's Pipes and I may test them out.

I have a bit of a collection, probably 30, mostly pre- 90's Brighams but maybe only 6 or so that I rotate through - which takes a while as I don't smoke daily but rather in fits and starts, more in the fall sometimes not at all through the summer. I have a number that are unsmoked and likely won't be; my Nording Hunters, a couple of Trypis' and a Brigham Sportsman. On second thought, maybe I should at least break those in - but I've wandered from the question.

I imagine I will find someone who appreciates the Brigham history and gift them. I do like the idea of distributing some to a BoB member. That would ensure they are appreciated. More thought and preparation required on this.
