Hi mugs,

I recently acquired some kbb yello boles and i'm wondering about the yellow coating. It seems like a strange gimmick...hey let's paint the bowl the yellow...and i'm wondering how great it is to smoke 60 year old yellow paint. I understand it's supposed to be honey cured...so did they just mix honey with yellow paint and call it a yello bole? Did they even know about paint toxicity or whatever back then? I admit it's flashy...but a little strange. After all they did invent brylon right? Although this was once the company was bought by someone else. what do you think? How do you like your kbb yello boles?

Good question. I think I would just remove it regardless of what it is. I have smoked them from new, though, and don't remember getting any kind of burning paint smell or taste from the coating. My grandfather used to buy them--apparently for the hell of it, as many were unsmoked, and I "inherited" a bagful. Long gone. I really liked some of their rhodesian/author shapes.

I have one really old one, has the yellow circle on the stem, no "honey" as it is an estate. I've been most disappointed in the briar. Smokes wet all the time. Take a few puffs and it gurgles like a running brook!! I've tried different 'baccy's, making sure it's nice and dry. No luck...Gurgle, gurgle, gurgle!! Hope you mucho better luck with yours. FTRPLT

I'd smoke them as is - the coating was more of a gimmick than anything else I think. I have heard complaints about newer YB coatings actually bubbling up and peeling off. Just remember, asbestos pipes were popular for years, so how bad could the yellow coating be compared to that?

The coating seems to work well for me. I say smoke it as is. I have had them new and estate. The coating seems very durable and endures. It is still there if you get a well used estate and ream the cake down.

I have a 1954 Yello-bole Canadian that is one of my best smokers. The only pipe that I have that smokes clean to the bottom every time. While the pipe is plain as dirt with no discernible "grain" to it...it is a burner!

ugh my luck suck is ****** lately i tried to buy this pipe from an ebayseller called nuemoney1...i asked to see a picture of the bowl since it was unsmoked and this genius only posted a bunch of close up photos of the shank...they ignored my requests for a photos and all my offers on the pipes were denied so i said f##k it i'll just pay full price on it...they f##king blocked me! and then after repeated messages to try get unblocked they sold the pipe for way below what i offered to buy it for. what an ******* so i'd avoid this seller who is obviously a dirty bidet

Obviously you'll never use that seller again!
