We're at a mean average of 58.83 for everybody.

But if you wanted to be a bully like @Balisong and exclude Gaius and myself as outliers, the average jumps up to 64.4. That 9.8% comes at the price of omitting over 16% of the data, and could lead to retaliation like the outliers excluding your data and calculating their own average... For example...

Without omitting any data, the median will give us a more accurate average than the mean would in this situation.

30 32 43 50 55 63 66 68 68 76 77 78

So the average age is 64.5, so far!

55+30+63+68+76+66+77+32+68+78+43+50 average just shy of 59. It is common practice to exclude data points of outliers which would increase the average age in this data set.
I apologize if my reply came across at all snarky Balisong! I made some typing errors, like skipping quite a few words words I thought I had wrote, and I've since realized I shouldn't do math while trying to write at the same time lol.

I like your method better. For once I'm above average!!

Of course in this case, it's not really a good thing. :(

I don't want to be pedantic, but the median is not is not the average--the mean is. But including the median is a good idea, since the distribution is asymmetric. And the "outliers" need to be included, unless all you want is the average age of the old members.
