I am pretty new to smoking a pipe and one of the things that I was a bit relieved to hear was that everybody relights their pipes :D . I do find that judicious use of a tamper helps me keep my relight numbers down a bit. Here are my observations so far on what seems to work well for me:
For...
The bourbons I enjoy most often (great taste and not obscenely priced) are Woodford Reserve and Knob Creek. I am also a big fan of Templeton Rye.
My signature old fashioned took me many months to perfect ;) :
In rocks glass put a splash of water, 2 sugar cubes, 3 dashes Angostura bitters...
I have a feeling that at least a few of you are as delighted by Rube Goldberg machines as I am. I just read about this coffee table book full of Goldberg's work and it's now on my must-buy list...
I made another tamper. This one was made with cocobolo, leather, and antler with stainless spacers. I've already used this one a couple of times and it feels really nice in my hand. It's a bit difficult to know what the wood is going to look like until you get everything ground down to the...
I hate to rub it in but it was 79 degrees and sunny here. Of course the tables will be turned in August when we're battling 115 degree temps here and you all are enjoying the summer. :D
I would recommend having your vitamin D levels tested and/or supplement your vitamin D3 intake. Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with depression (e.g. seasonal affective disorder) and our bodies need sunlight to make vitamin D. As the winter wears on and you may be experiencing a...
I am certain there are many here who can provide great advice for how to stock the shelves to appeal to experienced pipe smokers. Being relatively new to pipe smoking, I'm most definitely not one of them :) However, it might be helpful to hear the perspective of a novice like myself if he is...
Matches for me as well. The only time I will use a lighter (usually just a cheapo) is when I'm bird hunting with a corn cob pipe because matches are unwieldy to light while holding a shotgun :D
I decided to try and make a fancy pipe tamper. I used a carriage bolt for structural support and for the metal tamping surface. I used cocobolo and maple for the wood. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out!
I smoke outside. Of course the weather is nearly perfect year 'round. This is my view every night:
