A Question. Considering a new pipe (churchwarden)

Actually I think that I may have used Savinelli churchwarden upstairs. If so, I would sell it for $50 plus shipping. I will check today and let you know. Mike Hagley

Bill Taylor (Ashton Pipes) Died Yesterday

I am so sad to say that my friend Bill Taylor died yesterday. He was my friend, and I was his friend. I couldn't believe it when I got an email of his passing. I started crying, and went upstairs and told my wife that I really needed a hug. My wife had met Bill several times, and loved him as I...

    Replacing a Screw-In Stem

Certainly it can be replaced with a regular push in stem, but why would you want to do that? The Jobey link was an ingenious invention, allowing you to remove the stem while the pipe was being smoked or still warm from smoking. The threaded insert is to be left in the shank, and the stem can...

    Dating Ashton Pipes

There was a brief period when Ashtons destined for the US market did not have date codes. David Field (formerly the US importer) asked Bill Taylor to stop stamping the code since some retailers complained that potential customers would shy away from pipes that carried a code from several years...

    GBD bit question...

If you notice the GBD stamp on the shank is a rectangle. The stem stamp is also a rectangle. I can't recall ever seeing a rectangular logo on a GBD. The lower grade GBDs in the later years had a heat embossed logo on the stem, which was painted either white or gold. Mike

    GBD bit question...

That is a low grade GBD, and I believe that it just had a stamp on the stem. I don't believe there was ever a brass rondelle. Mike Hagley

    Dunhill Space Shuttle

Bill Taylor (Ashton) told me that he had made those pipes just before leaving Dunhill. I believe the small pipe is made to smoke, and can be removed from the holder. Mike

    Dunhill star question

I believe that the star was indeed stamped at the factory. Mike

    Dunhill star question

Personally, I wouldn't buy the pipe just because of the star. If you otherwise like the pipe, then go for it. I don't think that the star ads any value. Mike

    Dunhill star question

I have owned several Dunhills with stars stamped on the shank. I suspected that these were pipes that had been replaced under warranty. I spoke with John Loring several times about the stars, and he did not know what they represented, but ageed that possibly it indicated a replacement pipe. I...

    Curt Rollar pipes?

Mark and Curt started American Smoking Pipes back in the 1970s. The pipes that they made are stamped with MT or CR, indicating who made the pipe. They later went their separate ways, with Mark continuing to make pipes under the ASP name. Curt is well known for his bent cauldron shapes. You...
