I was shooting for another classic billiard on this one. It probably should have been rusticated, but I wanted to practice contrast staining some more. Feel free to tear it apart—I want to get better at this!
All done!
As a first try, I feel pretty good about this one, but it's far from perfect. I'll try and upload a better picture of the top/bottom profile when I get home from work, but I really blew it on the billiard symmetry from that angle. I got a little aggressive with the sanding wheel...
It's been a while, but I finally found some time to work on this thing. I also finished my shaping setup with an arbor and DA pad from Kurt Huhn, and it works magnificently well:
As for the pipe:
I was incredibly lucky with this piece of wood—so far there is only one tiny flaw (visible in...
As the guy who received the prototype version of Adam's replicas, I can attest that they seal very well and the tobacco inside retains normal moisture for at least 12 hours (haven't tried leaving anything in there longer than that). They hold about two bowls of tobacco and are just small enough...
Holy ****. I can't believe be manages to keep all the holes straight and lined up with each other at the bottom of the bowl with his bare hands, and working so damn fast, too.
Thanks, everyone!
A quick progress photo:
I'm about halfway done with shaping; I'll be making the chamber walls a bit thinner, and I need to start making it look more like a billiard and less like a lumpy poker. I got a little bit impatient with the rasp/file method, so I grabbed an...
Alright, here goes my first pipe. I'll be tracking my progress (and probably asking a ton of questions) here, so feel free to check back and offer any advice / criticism!
My lovely girlfriend bought me a plateaux kit from Mark Tinsky for Christmas, and I'm excited to dive in and get started...
I live in a crappy apartment at the moment, but someday when I own a place I'll have a room dedicated to reading, entertaining guests, and smoking. A couple more large bookcases and maybe another cabinet for the liquor, along with a few comfortable chairs, and I'll be good to go. I already smoke...
Thanks, guys. For those of you who use mason jars (or variants), how have you found the seals to work for tobacco? Could I cellar a blend in one for a couple years without the tobacco losing flavor?
Hello all,
Just wanted to introduce myself! My name is Drew, and I've been smoking pipes for about four years now. I'm also just starting to get into pipe carving as a hobby, and stumbled on this place while doing research for that.
Looking forward to getting to know the community!
