I thought about what you said. For me, I think it boils down to my love of the beauty of wood. Meerschaum just doesn't do it for me. I have about 60 briars and a few calabashes but no Meerschaums.
On this forum I hear of so many blends that are new to me. More new ones than ones I recognize. And, I've been a pipe smoker for 60+ years. Don't have time enough to try them all . . . but I'm trying.
I sent a 9BC to Pete for a stem and they sent the wrong stem. I had to send it again but they got it right the second time. A bit of a trans-Atlantic hassle.
Here's a not-so-great picture of an extraordinary pipe - a Savinelli E (E for Exceptional). Less than one per year have been awarded this grade, the highest, by Savinelli. It will soon be auctioned on eBay. Put in a search for it and you won't miss it.
Welcome Frank. I'm Rob. I collect Ed Burak's Connoisseurs, high end Peterson's and a few other marks. I smoke Virginia blends most of the time and am particularly enjoying Cut Virginia Plug and Golden Sliced at the present time.
I've heard members talk about pipes they save just for tasting new tobaccos. I don't understand this practice. Why not taste a new blend in the pipe you're going to smoke it in? It will taste different in, say, a clay or a Meerschaum.
