The Late ,Great Steve Gutz Pipe Room

Hi Dock, Long time no see. I'm now retired and living California these past 9 years. Steve had a Connoisseur Oom Paul - a panel I think - with great grain. Any idea who has it now? Many thanks, Rob

    Ehrlich's Broken Flake

Just had an email from Mary McNeil at McClelland. She thinks that Ehrlich's BROKEN FLAKE probably was their bulk #5115. RobD

    Passing a pipe cleaner

I think that a full-bent pipe or an Oom Paul can be "beautifully engineered" and still not pass a pipe cleaner due to the mechanics of the smoke hole. Sometimes an obstacle to passage can be overcome by pending the end (1/2") of the cleaner just so. RobD

    Oom Paul

I've been getting more and more into Oom Pauls lately. For a long time I've had a Connoisseur panel Oom Paul that is on my "last ten I would sell" list. More recently, I picked up a Dunhill Tanshell 591 and a little later, a Shell 591 (both dated 1960). Last one to be added was a Jobey Extra...

Oom Paul vs Hungarian: Bit of a rant.

I've always called that shape Oom Paul. It's been Oom Paul for about 100 years. But, if it's a Dunhill (I have a Shell and a Tanshell 591) it should be called Hungarian. But, I don't. I even call my Dunhills Oom Pauls. But, I'll be careful not to when I visit England. RobD

    Passing a pipe cleaner

Fred Hanna has suggested that most of the moisture that produces the gurgle collects at the tenon-mortise juncture, not at the bottom of the bowl. He suggests that we may be over-emphasizing the importance of being able to pass a pipe cleaner all the way from button to bowl. After paying...

    Ehrlich's Broken Flake

Mostly very dark (90-95%) with a few flecks of tan. Smooth and mild with just a little (not unpleasant) bite. Tin aroma, very "McClellan-y," wonderfully sour. I CAN indeed be more vague, but I don't think that's what you were after. RobD

    Ehrlich's Broken Flake

The old Ehrlich's in Boston sold a blend they called Broken Flake. I have a little left. I think it is a McClelland blend. Does anyone know which blend it was. It's a terrific Virginia and I'd like to get some in bulk if it was, indeed, a McClellan. RobD

WHAT'S YOUR THOUGHT'S ON MICHAEL KABIK PIPES?

I know that Kabik did a lot of pipes also stamped Sven-Lar. He executed some very interesting takes on Danish freehand shapes and also did some pretty bizarre but unique designs. RobD

Who Made That Pipe & Custombilt books

Herb Wilczak & Tom Colwell published "Who Made That Pipe?" c.1997. They list late 19th & early and mid-20 century markings and the country & company associated with them. The book is self-published; has a plastic loops binding. Very useful to look up obscure eBay listings, etc. The...

    Some thoughts about Jobey . . .

Some thoughts about Jobey . . . Two years ago, I saw a beautifully blasted Jobey billiard. So, for $20 I took a chance. As it turns out . . . A great smoker. So, I thought maybe I'd do a Jobey sub-collection . . . various shapes. I went back to eBay and bought two more blasted Jobeys and they...

Ed Burak Connoisseur Pipe Shop 1/8 Bent Pot.

I'm interested that you like pots for flakes. I always found that tall, slender tobacco chambers were best, to get a nice slow burn that brings out the Virginia sweetness. RobD

    Pipe rim cleaning

Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) is fatally toxic is you ingest too much of it. I would not use it on my pipes. RobD
