who has made perique at home

Same here. According to all the reading I've done real perique is a species of tobacco that grows in only one place in the world. St. James Parrish in Louisiana. I've also read that there is false perique and that it is made from a species of burley. Kentucky Green River burley if I remember...

    Fixed Blade Knife

Good advice Blackhorse. I still haven't found that one magic knife that will do it all and do it all well. When I was still teaching survival courses I always recommended the Moras. The little red plastic handled 510 is still one of my favs. I took five knives to test on a week long trip on a...

    Fixed Blade Knife

Thank goodness for that. I have a couple that have been lapped on the sidewalk. Did a darn good job. A thick plate of glass with an abrasive paste is good. Which method do you prefer? You probably don't use the sidewalk. :D I'm not that much into furniture making these days though I used to...

rattle trap next to a log

Many years ago my dad and I were fishing from his boat on a small pond. He was tossing crank baits for bass and I was letting a dough ball soak on the bottom hoping to latch into a big carp on the ultra light rod I was using. As I was cranking in the dough ball it was wobbling really well and a...

    Fixed Blade Knife

Boy howdy I rekkin! Salty dawgs for sure. Not convenient to use in the field either. Have you noticed how hard it is to get a good al oxide stone these days? The oil just soaks right thru them and puddles under the stone. My old stones don't do that. Good thing I've got a couple salted away.

    Fixed Blade Knife

I don't like the shape of the blade or handle on the 26 and the handle on the 9. Handles with finger grooves get in my way. they just don't feel right to me and they fine carving.

    Fixed Blade Knife

I don't have a problem sharpening my Kabar but I use aluminum oxide stones to touch up the edge and then switch to a soft Arkansas to polish it and then strop it real good on a leather strop charged with green chromium oxide paste. Shaving sharp and stays that way. That 1095 is good steel. The...

    Fixed Blade Knife

You going for the HD (heavy duty) Companion with the 1/8" blade or the regular Companion with the 1/16" blade? If going for the HD Companion make sure to order the one marked as such otherwise they'll send the one with the 1/16" blade. The handle on the Companion is a bit smaller than the handle...

    Fixed Blade Knife

Personally I'd go with the Condor Bushlore or a Falkniven F1. The Condors can be had for $50 if you look hard enough. The top price I've seen is $90. I have two and have put them both through the wringer. One is the first gen with the 3/16" thick blade and the other is a second gen with the...

    Shotgun rec's

I've fired a 9MM indoors with no hearing protection. Not bad. I shudder to think of a shotgun round.

    Shotgun rec's

I've got two Mossbergs 500's. The 500 Royal is a good gun...nice to look at too. The shorter barreled 500 lives in the bedroom and is loaded with double ought buck. The Royal is loaded with number four and in a different room. Both are smooth bores but accurate out to 100 yards with slugs. Good...

    Sweet dessert type aromatics

You could give Sutliff Molto Dolce a try. Very sweet and very good. Altadis Blue Note is another good one. Butternut Burley is sweet too. Didn't mean to send anyone on the chase of a wild goose so...Edited for correction of spelling

    Condor Tool and Knife.

I've got two of the Condor Bushlores. The first and second generation knives and both are great. I also have one of their small neck knives. I've beat hell out of the two Bushlores and they have stood up well. No complaints here. I've got 4 Moras too. Same story. Great little knives.
