    Recommendation for a newbie

Many of those suggested are simply not available where you're at. I'm thinking most, if not all of the Perterson blends are probably easy to find there. I suggest you tip toe through the tulips on those Petersons. Where to start?  Peterson Nutty Cut.

    If you had to . . . .

If limited to American "drug store/OTC" blends, it'd be Carter Hall (at least a tub of which I always have around). Troost Special Cavendish (orange pouch) is pretty decent as well.

WTG Chief = mineral oil. WTG  ;)

    C&D Purple Cow

Nope, emphatically, Cornell & Diehl does not us propylene glycol in any of their blends. Now that said, that doesn't mean that ALL of their blends are copacetic to every smoker. This blend didn't work for you. Move on.

    Vulcanite Bits

To move this along -- Just use mineral oil.  It's food grade, it won't go rancid, and it's cheap. I stopped using olive oil many years ago when it went rancid on me in Southeast Asia. I switched to butcher block oil, but that's expensive.  Mineral oil is cheap and works very well.
