    Unstable Equilibrium

Every year the Pipe Makers Form does a pipe trade. This year's theme was a bamboo sitter. Here is my entry.  Please let me know what you think. Todd

My Fourth Attempt at Carving a Pipe

Ron, what the heck?! I go away for a couple of days and when I get back you're suddenly a master pipe maker? You did a very nice job on that pipe. And I really like the shank extension. You managed to pull off something rare. It is original AND it looks good. Congrats. By the way, that...

    pipe problems

Ok, that's not burn out. Pipes don't burn out in the shank because there is no fire in the shank (unless you're doing something really wrong! :D ) The only thing that goes through the shank is smoke and moisture. I am guessing that there may be some porosity in the Briar that is allowing the...

    pipe problems

It sounds like there are a couple of things going on here. The finish is bubbling because it is lacquer. This finish looks nice at first, but can bubble if the pipe is smoked hot. The dark spot sounds like the start of a burn through. I am guessing that you are smoking your pipe way too hot...

    Florida Vacation

I will be vacationing with my family at the Northeast point of Florida in late July. Can anyone give me advice on fishing, metal detecting or fossilized shark tooth hunting? I'll need something to do when I'm not smoking my pipe. Todd

    talk to me about tonquin.

He's right. Let it dry well before smoking.

    talk to me about tonquin.

So, how did you like the 1792?
  17. taharris

    talk to me about tonquin.

Tonquin, oil from the Tonquin bean, is not the same as Lakeland essence. Lakeland has a much more flowery type of taste, whereas tonquin is somewhere between black licorice and turpentine. SG 1792 has tonquin and I've heard that Royal Yacht does, but I'm not sure I believe it. Tonquin is a...

    No more Peterson's, it's Rattray's now

Well, University Flake and Irish Flake are two of my favorites. I don't really care who makes them or what they call them as long as they get them right. Todd
