    What are you smoking?

It's a pleasant 41F in Phila. On the ride into work this AM, I managed a bowl of ERRd and C&D BigNBurley 1:1 mix in a CustomBilt straight kinda apple shape. If you know CustomBilts, then you know how their shape chart only used classic shapes as a starting point, and then evolved. But, I've...

The best year of Christmas Cheer?

True fans, of which I may be only slightly, considered the '92 version to be the standard by which to judge other years. I only have a '97 unopened left from the '90s. I thought that the '04 and '05 were flavorful if unexceptional smokes, but light years better than most other VAs. I may not...

    a query on music.

For classical music, I always seem to gravitate to the early 20th century English (Ralph vaughn Williams, Elgar et al), and Mahler. For jazz, how can one not like early Miles Davis, like 'Kind of Blue'. I have become fond of Pat Metheny, esp his mid '80s works

    What's your pipe story?

Funny story. April 1966. Standing on the corner outside of Drexel tech, slide rule by my side, pocket protector glistening with dozens of pens and pencils, attired rather preppily smoking a Benson and Hedges cigarette, staring at my penny loafers, when two old hairy guys, flannel shirts and...

    Top Five Tobaccos

Easy enough for today, before midnight (maybe): ERRd 5Bros PA Haunted Bookshop/OJK Walnut But these are the tobaccos I usually have on my shelf, next to the computer table. These are also the tobaccos that I'm most likely to reach for without much thought.

    Happy Thanksgiving

Best wishes to each brother and sister of the briar for a wonderful Thanksgiving day. ""We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures." -Thornton Wilder (1897-1975)

    Cellaring American-style Burleys

I've had PA in the plastic tub sitting since 2000, and the flavor is not remarkable different but tasty still. ERRd will probably be okay, at least I hope so, since I have 25 large 'tins' in storage. Our own Gospelman had a 30+ YO sample of Union Jack, another larus Bros product, which he...

If you had $100 to spend on pipe tobacco what would you buy?

These days, $100 will buy 5 tubs of ERRd or 7 tubs of PA. Considering that ERRd is to be no more, my first try would be the ERRd. If ERRd was not available, however many tubs of PA and a few Walnut would work nicely. I'm dismayed that 5Bros is up to $3.75-$4.00/pouch. A few of them would...

    Smoking while driving

In the days before the Flood, when the Feds didn't care about abused workers traveling long hours and smoking, I would simply fill 5-7 pipes and lay them on the seat next to me. A lighter and some cleaners, and a thermos of coffee, and the drive from Phila to Morgantown WV was almost tolerable...

    finding the "one"

The "One". Great idea, but difficult in the best of times. My first "One" was Blue Boar, but it was discontinued in the mid' 80s. I was pissed off that a company as large as American Tobacco would voluntarily stop a national favorite. But, I was smart enough, or I thought, to always have an...

    Don Vito's Reviews

I'm thinking more like Henry Miller describing his perambulations in post WWI Paris, part psychological meanderings and part travelogue and history. Vito, please continue. They're akin to the late Jonas Mekas' films.

    Contemplative/Complex Pipe Tobacco

There have been two blends that occupied my full attention while smoking: State Express and Constantinople. Now, both have been gone almost 30 years, Constantinople probably closer to 40 years, but neither would let you do other things while smoking them. Constantinople (C) was an over stated...

    What are you smoking?

I can't sleep, so I'm smoking and listening to a program on Discovery Channel about 'Area 51'. Tonight's choice is ERRd in a Peterson London -made pot.

    What's your favorite pipe book?

My all-time favorite, in addition to the fine books mentioned, is Georges Herment "The Pipe". Herment was a poet and a real Renaissance man coming out of WWII who lived on a houseboat in England and wrote with real affection about pipes and tobacco. Well worth the effort in finding the book...

    What are you smoking?

C&D Riverboat Gambler in a 2002 KW Shellcraft Competition pipe that Feuerbach did for the first national UPCA-sanctioned event. The blend is good, with dark burley and perique. Marc, good that you had a great time. Welcome back.

    Heavy Hitters

One more favorite of mine is C&D Big N Burley, which could almost be an all day smoke. I say Almost because it can be stronger than one likes depending on the bowl size of the pipe.

    Heavy Hitters

Sir, you didn't note 5Bros or G-H Dark flake unscented, Coniston Cut Plug could be penciled in the list, too. These deliver a fine sledge to the back of the head, or perhaps, we could call them 'full' tasting.
