I think early on it's probably good for practicing, too. Once you're good and doing it for money, it's probably not worth the time if it doesn't look like it'll be a nice pipe. What about lilac?

That sounds really intriguing. The Gawiths use fire-cured VA leaf in a lot of their blends, but I don't think it is fermented a la Perique. Does anyone know how Perique is usually cured prior to fermentation?
