    Jobs vs Gates

Yea I was thinking about that today. Steve got right chatty the past couple of years, might have been his knowledge that the end was near and he wanted to participate in as many ways as possible before the end came. I have been a registered developer with Apple for quite a few years and have...

    Jobs vs Gates

Guess I would have to be firmly in the camp that both made significant contributions in their own way. Apple was the first to bring to market a computer with built-in keyboard and video interface that could run software that "everyman" could use, rather than just running assembler or Basic...

    Interesting You Tube Guitarist

Here's another. She ain't a man! There has been some dispute if she is just miming or not but some of her videos are more instructional in nature and if she is miming in those then someone is a very good video editor. <iframe width="560" height="315"...

    The mason jar aging process

Same answer as "how many licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop". Once opening a well-aged jar, no one has ever been able to close it up again and wait. Generally, I don't find too much issue with opening and closing a jar other than it may probably not get a proper seal from the...

    Lathe Buffing Extensions

If you already own a lathe or are purchasing one for other reasons, then I don't see why not. You should be able to add the same wheels (backed or un-backed) that will attach to a normal buffer/grinder-style setup. May take a little jury-rigging depending on the type of collet or chuck you are...

    Lighter vs. Matches Poll

If we could only get those Vesta matches in the USA, you could name your own price from many pipe smokers!

    Lighter vs. Matches Poll

I'm a matches guy. Funny, cause I always carry my Zippo, and never have matches on my person although I have them in my pipe case. I just prefer to use a wooden match and let it burn off for a few seconds before touching it to the tobacco.

    Favorite Vapers

My goto vaper has always been McClellend 2015 which is especially good after a few years of aging and used to be very inexpensive especially in large bulk quantities. Lately I have been leaning a lot more toward PSLNF which is also very good. Can't tell you about the aging for a couple more...

    Howdy from Calgary Alberta

Howdy Hunter, I think you will find a couple more Calgarians in the BoB and certainly a good bunch of Canadians. I myself am a Canuck but have lived in the USA for almost 20 years. One of my 2 younger twin sons has lived in Calgary for about 5 years now, and I have 2 sisters in Edmonton. PS I...

    A disaster!

Should be an easy fix and you will never tell the difference if done correctly.

My Weekend with Half & Half Tobacco

During my "Summer of burleys" a couple of years ago I smoked nearly all the OTC's I could find but never tried H&H. Have heard a lot of poor to bad reports on it which keeps me steered away. Too bad cause that is one that our local grocer still sells for under $20 a tub. Guess I need to grab a...

    Refurbishing estate pipes

I would have to say yes. Oxidation is the combination of the vulcanite rubber with atmospheric oxygen. When removed you are taking away a minute amount of the stem material. However, like anodizing on a piece of aluminum, I have always seen it as a very thin exterior coating rather than like...

    Refurbishing estate pipes

I have restored a great number of vulcanite pipe stems and have found that the most effective and most controllable method is using sandpaper. Mr. Clean sponges don't cut fast enough, and a wheel with rouge tends to round over the sharp edges especially at the stem-shank joint and around the bit...

    Kindle vs Nook

Wife and I both have Kindles. For books and other written content they are great, the e-ink is very easy on the eyes. I use an app called Calibre to manage my content and convert non-kindle content to the necessary formats, it will even do a reasonable job of converting standard pdf's into mobi...

Plug knife - job specific or any old knife?

My old Case trapper does as good a job as any I can imagine. It is always in my pocket.

    "Rain" Tonight at Wolftrap VA

Saw Rain last year at KC's Starlight theater, another outdoor venue. It actually did drizzle during the show but the wife and I had taken our goretex so we sat through it in decent comfort. You won't regret going, I have only ever been a casual Beatles fan but the costumes and original film...

    Hmmm what to do

Hmmm... seems like a perfect opportunity and a challenge to start collecting Zippos!

    Rim Cleaning

Spit on a piece of cotton t-shirt (sometimes the one that I am wearing) and a bit of rubbing works great. Seems the enzymes in the saliva does a good job of breaking down the tar in the smoke stain. Plus it is in plentiful supply and I always have some with me when I am smoking.

Breaking in a new pipe with sugar?

Never used anything to hasten the carbon or cake build up. I will often smoke an OTC burley like PA or CH for the first few bowls as these seem to create a layer of cake quicker than does a va or other tobacco. Other than that I just smoke 'em, trying to keep the bowl as cool as possible for the...

    Where to buy cigars?

Not likely much to say over all the other good comments. I am lucky to have 3 really good B&M's within 10 minutes and I like that so I try and buy from them on a regular basis. Each has a different strength, one has a killer selection of pipes and tobacco, one has 2 huge TV/sports rooms, coffee...
