The Dunhill group designation was to identify the size of the ebauchon used to make the pipe. The ebauchons were graded by size from 1 to 4. Obviously ODA were made from larger blocks. The group size had nothing to do with the bowl capacity, but obviously one would expect the larger the group...

I have ODAs from the 1920s and 1930s and they are certainly as large as any ODA in the same shape from the 1960s and later.  There are a couple ODA, 806 comes to mind, that were never large pipes, and about the same size as a group 4 LB from pre 1970.  An LB would today be a group 5 or possibly...

I know GBD shapes, having owned several hundred over the years. I also have GBD shape charts. Sometimes the non-branded or private label GBD did have a shape number on them. Mike

I believe the first two are GBD made. They are on the GBD shape chart. The two that are stamped Arlington were probably made by Arlington Briar, which was a huge pipe maker in the DC area. They made many private label pipes for shops all over the US. Mike

I have done this several times. I used a coping saw, as well as a hacksaw blade in one of those handles designed to accommodate broken blades. I finished off the edges with sandpaper and applied some Kiwi brown shoe polish. Quite happy with the results. Mike
