Many people say this about a pipe. I guess they mean that it doesn't gurgle and has a bit that fits their teeth? Anything else?

Besides what you say, I might add "good draw; smokes cool/biteless (at my usual smoking pace.)"

The pipes that I consider my "good smokers" (and I am getting very fussy) are pipes that I can pack carelessly with almost any style of tobacco, and light up, smoke without thinking about or fussing with, and they offer a great smoke, no gurgle, good flavor, and no hassles. I have lots of perfectly decent pipes, I guess, but I have only a few that I consider really top-class pipes in terms of behavior.

I have 2 that meet that class of pipe one is a no name english with a big bowl and one is savinelli nonpareil9604 big pipe.

Tobacco burns cool and dry, passes a cleaner with the stem on, has a comfortable bit and fits the hand well.

The only thing I'd add are tolerant heat dispersion and the quickness to get rid of old tobacco flavors/ghosting. My "Danish Thrift," as I call it, nope, it ain't a looker, but for some reason I can switch tobaccos from heavy Cavendish or Periques and it only takes a bowl (sometimes none) to jump to the new flavor.
