The John is John Patton. You can get the Oriental Dusk via 4-Noggins by either emailing Rich or simply ordering another of Patton's bulk blends in a 1/2 lb. size and writing in that you want Orientla Dusk in the "Comments" section, or whatever it's called, at close to the end of your order process. It costs the same as the other half pounders...about $20.

I found this one by going to 'the review site'...clicking on the Advanced Search option at the upper far right of the screen and listing only ingredients as search options...clicking on Turkish and disallowing Latakia. It's listed in the results. I've also found many other treasures in this genre by doing that, or listing Oriental instead of Turkish and being careful to read descriptions...in which guys would comment about Latakia if the oreintal included that leaf. Thus I found about ten or twelve likely prospects...not one of which has disappointed...yet.

Here are my search results for the Turkish but no latakia thing (I have no idea if this will work...but I'll try it...nope, it just gives the search engine...but play with it...it's fun):

I've found C&D's Oriental Silk, Riverboat Gambler, Sunday Picnic, Guilford Courthouse, etc. (I really like the first two). Also G&H Sam's Flake...Stogie from P&C, etc.

Ones I want to try but haven't are the Pebblecut and 221-B Arcadia from McClelland, New York Pipe Club- Bedloe's Island from P&C, Golden Cashmere from Just For Him...and from Peretti, Oriental #40 and Blend D-9507.

I've also recently had very good luck with MacBaren (who woulda thunk it) and their HH Arcadian Perique and the brand new Old Dark Fired (which is just a stunner for those who want a dark fired rather like the flakes, ropes & twists from the Gawithian crew, but not so much bitterness or intense strength). Someone over at MadBaren is doing something very, very right!

Wow,
Thanks for all your input and great advice, I am very grateful for this.
I shall definitely look into the blends you have suggested.
I am familiar with 4noggins in Vermont from posts on our forum but haven't as yet ventured into any of their blends. Now with your recommendations I'll certainly be contacting them. Thanks much.

BH,
Thanks for your posts. It's such a nasty lightning storm day here in Maine that I'm Sitting back checking recent posts here and thinking about your description of Oriental Dusk blend. I know you referenced John?? But don't know exactly to whom you are referring. I Love Turkish blends and that one sounds very tempting. Is it available and where if you don't mind my asking.
Presently and for some years now my favorite Turkish blend is L J Peretti's Tashkent blend. There's no cigar leaf in there and it has a bit of sweetness because of a liberal amount of fine Va but the Turkish comes through as five stars for my palate.
Regards,
Andy
If your'e a true afficionado of the Oriental/Turkish focused blends and have not tried it, you need to get McClellands BEST blend in this genre I've had the pleasure of smoking. It's their Oriental #14 and I've been smoking it for many, many years now. It's along the lines of the old Sobranie759 with the emphisis on the Orientals/Turkish/Va's with the Latakia just in the background adding a nice smoky smooth note to the spicy/sweet of the va's and orientals. If you like, it does age beautifully but also is great right away if you don't want to wait :p

Monbla,
I have some of McClellands #14 that I've had cellared for many years. It's been so long since I have smoked any that I don't really recall exactly what it is like. I do however seem to recall that all of their oriental mixtures were very similar and had too much of a tangy Virginia flavor for my liking. And I am certain I have the other green label tins besides number #14. Guess I'll have to pop some of the old stuff to rekindle my memory. Thanks for the input.

That ought to be some REAL TASTEY stuff by now! If it's too "tangy" just send it on down to Texas and I'll smoke the "tang" out of it for ya :p

I've always wanted to like the Mickey C Oriental blends...but they're all laced with the evil L...which I can't smoke. I have a very bad reaction to it...being that I tend to throw the pipe as far as I can. As you might imagine, I try very hard to avoid it.
