Thanks all for your 'food for thought' posts. I collaborate musically with a few guys over in the States and although I've never met any of these lads, we have all become good friends. So the option of one or two of my Songcrafter buddies snapping me up a Country Gent or two and shipping them over for me is a very real possibility. I'm a guitar teacher by trade and I'm hoping things will pick up after Xmas, thus allowing me to continue adding to my pipe collection. In the grand scheme of things, it is a pretty inexpensive hobby really. It's not like I'm buying Elvis's suits or 50's Les Pauls or 1966 World Cup winners medals or diamond encrusted skulls. Or something.

I'll have to break out my couple of cobs now. I found I really loved the natural finish on the least expensive line by MM, but I burned through one of those just after giving away my fresh back up to a friend. (The ones I've got are the finished surface.)

One of my best smoking memories was a cube cut burley blend topped with pear or apple I think in the now burned out cob. Really great combo for sure, and I ought to seek the same pleasure with other tobaccos too. I've been either loving my briars instead or trying to smoke new cake into the new ones though so I've not wanted to "waste" smoking time in cobs as a result. Maybe that's been foolish. I'll be smoking the cobs for a good change and experiment shortly.

(I've meant to get playfully colorful lucite forever stems as well but haven't gotten off my butt to get them--a cob would look great with a red or deep green stem, I'm thinkin'.)

Ooh, I'm thinkin' a John Deere cob would be awesome if there were a good way of doing it! Or an Allis Chalmers! My dad used to work for AC! Hmmm, I gotta see about this! :D

I wouldn't be surprised if there are some John Deere promotional cobs hidden away in some rural attic or hay loft. Back in the 20's-40's MM made a lot of promotional cobs, such as boxes of 12 reed cobs for Dodge Truck. From what I can find about the Dodge Truck promotion is that when you bought a Dodge Truck, you were given a box of unassembled reed cobs, so you could make some new friends.

That stuff would be fun to stumble on. I'll have to keep an eye out.

I went online to the USPS International Shipping page and put in 12 oz. for a shipping weight. To the UK it said that the shipping would be a bit over $10 for what we can Priority...and they quoted 6 - 10 days.

Based on previous cobb recommendations, I ordered 2 freehand cobbs from the Missouri Meerschaum company, they also said shipping would be $10, but I got a 'insufficient postage' note yesterday, and had to go and pay an additional £18 before the postman would deliver it... so be aware charges may come regardless of what they say the price is. But maybe its me, I'm not having a lot of luck with international stuff lately.

You'll be glad you did when you receive the Freehand Cobs. If you like the smaller ones, you'll love these. They really are the top of the line Cobs made by MM. First smoke in one of them and you'll agree.

Don't let the large bowl size worry you, it doesn't absolutely have to be filled to the top to be enjoyed.

Actually I do have them now, but I'm going to let a friend of mine pick which he'd like for a Christmas present before I smoke the other... so might be a while before I can try em, but they do look decent. And to me, a big bowl is a plus, I'm enthusiastic about bigger pipes in principal :)
