I fear the thin dry stuff is all I've got and yes it's tough on this newbie. I knew I was supposed to gently sniff the tobacco just to get it in the nose. On my first attempt I inhaled to softly from too far away. It didn't even move. So on the second try I got closer and inhaled a bit stronger. I sucked that tobacco up my nose, through my eyeball, and up towards the underside of my skull. But seriously, I had to take a knee that first time. It's gotten better but my technique at this point is pretty much getting some in the nose while avoiding a repeat of that first time.
With the dry, thin snuff - try taking a deep breath and at the tail end of the breath just as you're reaching lung capacity, gently place the snuff in the front of your nose. This works for me 99% of the time with no coughing, choking, etc.
I also find that if I kink the nostril a bit before the light sniff, it also helps. It alters the passage to the sinuses enough to discourage any errant particles from flying to high, but not so much (as actually pinching near the bridge of the nose) that it restricts airflow to the point that you have to actually sniff harder to make anything happen.
In an embarrassing effort to demonstrate what I mean (tough to describe in words), behold:
Somehow, I would manage to shoot 99% of my pinch directly into my eye with that! I'll have to develop a kind of snuff potato gun. At least then I can start in the nostril.
