Basic Introduction

Greetings all,

My name is Patrick and I am new into Pipe Smoking. I live on Cape Cod and work as a professional advocate representing the recrational fishing community. I also own a competative BBQ team.


I am a very serious cigar enthusiast and some might recognize my screen name as I was a moderator on the old eHerf.com and was active on some of the other cigar boards. I have been pipe curious for years and recently was introduced to pipe smoking by a couple of friends.

I was gifted a full bent Peterson system 314 and a straght Tinderbox to get me started along with a sampler of tobaccos. I am here because I am very obsessed with the Briar right now and figured I should join a messag board.

Anyway...I am here now and look forward to partifpating in the board.

Post pics of your Competition Smoker and Grills, if you get a chance. I'm running a 18.5" Weber Smokey Mountain for the occasional Pulled Pork, Ribs, or Brisket. I even do Chicken on it occasionally.

After over 15years of smoking cigars, I finally bought myself a pipe 'starter kit'. Tks Cigar International - I'm now hooked. Basic Briar Brindisi pipe came with a pack of Captain Black (Lane Limited - ok basic uneventful smoke), can of Stanwell (Melange - very nice, especially with a side serving of calvados brandy) and Davidoff (Blue - which I haven't tried yet).

After a month or so and 6-8 bowls, I ordered myself up a Stanwell HCA V and just received it last week. Along with that I grabbed some Peterson (Connoisseurs' Choice - very nice also, very similar in my opinion to the Melange) and Escundo (Navy Deluxe which I haven't tried yet either). I'm loving the long churchwarden stem as well as the shorter supplied one.

Bottom line - my name is Mike, I'm from Toronto, Canada and I'm a Pipe Smoker. I've perused your forum over the last 6 months and I thank you after the fact for all your information to date.

As a young child I vagely remember my father smoking a pipe - but remember well his 'collection' of 4-5 in their wooden rack in our basement recroom.(wish he hadn't given then away) I watched him briefly smoke cheap cigars while I was in my early teens. I dabbled in Colts and Black & Milds when I entered into the Military Reserves in my late teens. Then once I entered Law Enforcement in my mid 20's I again took up the odd Habano, quickly realizing life was too short to smoke cheap sh*t! In short order I found myself smoking a few less to afford myself a better quality smoke. For the past 10+ years I'd rather not smoke then smoke a Camel - as our Yank friends say.

Throughout my career, nothing gave me more pleasure then lighting up on my last night shift while overlooking the city or better yet visiting my dad for a Single Malt or Port while sharing a couple quality cigars.

Having resently resigned/retired at an early age to start a next chapter of my life as a small business owner, I look forward to experincing yet again the finer things in life - Quality briar and tobacco. 40 is the new 80 as my friends have been saying after finding out I have taken up the pipe.

My simple pipe impressions so far - not for everyone, difficult to 'get working right' - the experience once you get it right - priceless.

A question before ending my introduction if I may. Roughly how long are most of you taking to smoke the average bowl? Without it really going out or setting it down - if one was to smoke it straight through while avoiding letting it get to hot?
