I rather like the original plastic stems. Then again, I don't chew on my pipes.

Why not Kyle?? When I run out of gum sometimes I substitute a stem.

The original plastic bits have been replaced by acrylic bits that look and feel pretty much like the old plastic ones.

Another plus - they color after a while.

This is my old Diplomat, had it for a few years and still use it regularly - several times a week. 8)

For comparison, this is what it looked like when it was relatively new.

The advantage of buying cobs direct from MM is that you can order natural versions of many of their models. And the naturals do smoke much better than the finished versions, IMNSHO.
This is my experience.

The spool "Cobwarden".

Got this about 10 yrs ago and converted it to a churchwarden 3 yrs later. The stem was from a Brebbia Lectura (crappy pipe!) that broke on me. I straightened the stem over the stove. A bit of careful drilling to the shank and the stem fit perfectly. That was more luck than skill I have to admit. This sees lots of bowls of James J. Fox Dorisco Mixture.

My apologies. By "original" I meant "OEM." Meaning, I like whatever stems come with the pipe. They suit me fine. 8)
