Can't see it

This burley fad is just a fad. Yes, it works in a supplemental way or to move a blend one way or the other but, personally, what's all the fuss about?

Blasphemer!!! :affraid:

Like anything else, depends on the burley. And the guy what's smokin it....... ;)

Puffs, Peretti, Uhle, and to a lesser extant GLP, produce fine Burley blends, I just finished a nice bowl of what Ithink is the finest Burley out the Peretti's Somerset flake. No fad here just a shifting of tastes and experiences, and desires, Ken
Pacem en Puffing!

I used to feel the same way Paul. Someone would give me some burley to try and I found it tasteless and bland compared to my Dunhill's #965. Then one day someone offered me some McBaren's Navy Flake and my pipe smoking intrests changed immediately. From there I moved onto other burley flakes like Solani's Aged Burley Flake and most recently Peterson's University Flake. Now I can't get enough of burley! Outside of the occasional VA, it's all I smoke now!

I've been very happy with several burley blends including GatlinBurley and Jim's Sweet Burley.

I just looked at the date of the first post and assumed legs were being pulled.

Not really.

It seems like a cyclical trend...

As I try to refine my cellar, I've been scratching my head wondering what true burley blend do I enjoy. As I focus on GLP, while I like Barbary Coast and Cumberland, I'm not going to stockpile them.

Interesting, though, as my Mac Baren Mixture Scottish Blend ages, I'm finding I enjoy it more. The only other one I really enjoy is OJK. University Flake was my favorite a few years ago, but I'm now like O'Dawg and find it strong.

cyclical: OTC to latakia to VA to Vaper and I can't move on to Burley.

I'm stuck in the Va/per camp.

I know you are mostly addressing more "high-end" blender burleys but PA, CH, SWR and dozens of others have been pipe smoking staples for decades. Nothing more comforting than puffing away on a safe, satisfying bowl of straight burley when it seems like the rest of the world has turned upside-down!

PS I would have included my (and perennial) fav Walnut but many may not want to include it in the straight burley catagory. :)

Burley doesn't excite my passion the way Lat and Va blends do. It's more about Burley's one spectacular sweet, nutty note, and vitamin N on the stronger tobaccos. I enjoy Burley as a respite from Lat and Va blends, and I feel the ghosts of my American pipe smoking predecessors in the room with me when I do.

I must speak up for Burleys. Most Burleys are very consistant when it comes to delivering an excelent smoke, from almost any pipe, or bowl size. I beleive that is why a host of us cling to that leaf. I have a good amount in my stash at all times.
A great Baccy for breaking in new pipes.
LONG LIVE THE BURLEYS

"There's a story behind every bowl"

As has been said, it all comes down to the puffer. I personally am not a big fan of burly and I think it's because I want every last wisp of smoke comin. Through my stem to be sweet Virginia goodness or smokey English mastery. As much as burley seems to balance out the ember and flavor, I think it to often takes away more than it adds to a blend.

Isn't perique burley prior to it's transformation?

The Kentucky fired was the one thing keeping me from really liking JKP.

C&D is synonymous with high quality burley IMO.

Burley is what I cut my teeth on as a new piper. Various Uhle's blends figured large in the beginning.

Still like me a blend where Burley is a player.

Cheers,

RR

I think this just goes to show how individualistic our tastes are. I don't mean in the trite sense that everyone likes different things, but literally that due to our respective body chemistries we actually taste different things. I greatly prefer burlies over straight VAs because I get a much richer, fuller flavor from them. Seriously, I can hardly taste anything when I light up a bowl of FVF, but when I smoke PA or CH I'm inudated with flavor (sweet, nutty). To me, VAis useless unless blended with other leaf that somowhow sets it off (latakia, perique, burley). A straight burley, however, is quite smokeable to me. The one exception to me is Blackwoods FLake, which I could smoke all day sometimes. And that doesn't even get into the issue of tongue bite, which I think is another personal chemistry thing. VAs tend to shred my tongue, but burlies simply don't...

Well, doncha just hafta feel sorry for the poor sod? I can understand the different tastes and all, we've all been there and maybe back as well. It's really not about different tastes at all now is it? He asks outright...'what's all the fuss about'...and as that's the case it's about understanding. What can I say? If there's a lack of understanding there's really not a lot we can do to help. Sorry. ;)

You said what I wanted to say a lot more calmly that I would have. If you don't like a particular variety of tobacco, don't smoke it. But why bash anyone and everyone who enjoys that variety?
