Can anyone recommend a good aromatic?

Hate to rain on your parade, Tex, but University Flake is indeed an aromatic.
In that case, I do smoke an aromatic after all.
As an afterthought, similar topping to the old Dunhill Three-Year Matured Virginia as I recall.

Hey guys, thanks for the suggestions! In answer to a question regarding me being more specific, I loved the 'Planta Black Vanilla Flake', though because I left it in the tin rather than storing it properly, it lost its flavour all too quickly. The 'Sweet Peach' was a nice smoke, no problems with lighting or biting, though the taste was fairly artificial, it had something sickly about it. What I am looking for is a heavy tasting, fruity flake I think, that burns well without much relighting.

The only aromatics I like at all are Dan's Blue Note (which meets your description of a "heavy tasting, fruity flake I think, that burns well without much relighting"), C&D Autumn Evening (which is heavy tasting and burns well, but is more of a maple flavor than fruit), and a Boswell's Christmas Cookie (which is heavy tasting and burns well enough, but tastes like a spicy cookie).

Maybe Erinmore Flake then?

The reason Connoiser's Choice stands out to some of us is that it has all kinds of flavors... fruit, rum, vanilla.... just about everything! And it has some super quality tobacco carrying it all.

All you can do is try some out!

Maybe Firedance Flake? That's a heavy blackberry-vanilla-brandy taste. Def. let it dry well or cube-cut it, though.

Have you tried Grousemore or Haddo's Delight?

Also, as a converted arromatic smoker, keep in mind that they don't hold their flavor as you pointed out, so keep only what you can smoke. My Autumn Eve is even lost it's sweetness (which is actually fine by me).

I've lost my taste for arros, I guess.

Oh, I got one for you: Bob's Chocolate Flake from Gawith.

Haddo's Delight is my favorite tobacco of all time but I would not in anyway describe it as an aromatic even though it does have some kind of topping. I don't think of the Chocolate Flake as an aromatic either though. So maybe it is just my misunderstanding of what an aromatic tobacco is. If I don't taste a core of solid tobacco flavor then I think aromatic. Haddo's and Chocolate flake both have a solid tobacco core. So really I guess I'd like to know what separates an aromatic from a non-aromatic. Any thoughts from you guys? Inquiring minds want to know! :lol!:

Ordinarily, a tobacco would be defined as aromatic if some non-tobacco flavoring agent is added - vanilla, cherry, blueberry, whateverweirdassthingtheydumponlakelands, etc. So in the past, things were known as English style tobacco if they had no flavoring (so, straight virginias, va/burley blends, latakia blends, orientals) and aromatic if they did have something added.

We ordinarily classify English mixtures today as ones being latakia/oriental/virginia combos, and leave Virginias in their own sort of category.

This designation has no bearing on the actual smell. Some non-aromatic tobaccos smell a lot better than certain aromatics I know of. And of course, there are so-called transition blends, like, say, Blatter Reserve, that are English in nature but have some added top-flavor... pretty sure BR has a bit of chocolate in it, for example.

So University Flake is an aromatic because it has a distinct blueberry essence added to it, whereas the similar Irish Flake does not, for example. (But UF is a MAN'S aromatic, and and ***-kicker.)

Any of the C&D Aro's are usually very good. No goop, Great room notes, and they usually taste like tobacco, not chemicals.....
If you like engligh aros....Capt. Bob's blend by them is very nice......I can also recomend Nutty Irishman..... :D

Hey guys thanks for all your help! I settled on Peterson's Connoiseur's Choice after reading through all the recommendations. Though two questions regarding the tobacco when it arrives, what is the best way to store in and make sure it doesn't lose its flavour (akin to my Planta Black Vanilla Flake) and is there any difference between the broken flake used in the blend and 'normal' flakes?

Thanks guys.

Jimmy, "broken flake" is just that - flakes that somebody has ripped apart. These appear in Connoiseur's as the big wafer looking bits. I also suspect that they are the tastiest bits, and I have half a mind to pick em all out and smoke a bowl!

You'll smoke it WAYYYY before it loses any flavor. It has quite a heavy topping on it, as you now have found out, and it NEVER seems to go away! :D
