Churchwardens? Pros? Cons? Preferences?

I also have a Stanwell H.C.A and I enjoy it. It's not in my regular rotation, but I used to smoke it all the time when I lived in South Carolina. I goes without saying that many southerners found me a bit....eccentric.

I don't have a churchwarden, but when I find an estate at a reasonable price,I'm going for one that's for sure.

I like them, BUT.........I find that they smoke "wet" if your tobacco is reasonably moist.....The long draw allows condensation to form, etc. BUT....if I use some drier tobacco, no problem. They are great to hold while reading a book in a comfortable chair.

Another observation: I learned this by experience: Do not hold the pipe by the bowl and use the pipe stem to point at your wife when talking to her to make a point!!! Does not go over very well !! LOL !!

Would you guys suggest buying a whole new pipe or having a churchwarden stem made for one of my preexisting pipes? I have a few smaller lighter ones that I believe would be perfect, such as my Savinelli Bent Bob which is the same as their churchwarden pipes (the black and white ones) but with a smaller stem. It would be a perfect churchwarden and I am pretty sure a churwarden stem would only set me back $25 at the most.

Might set you back a few dollars more than $25, but I guess it depends on the maker.

This is a perfectly viable option, and one you may be glad you did. My last Churchwarden I bought, I requested an additional smaller stem. 'wardens are great for nights at home, but not so good on the drive into work. By having dual stems, I can still keep the bowl in my regular rotation and use it as a shorty if it's time to go out of the house.

I found Pipe Cleaners for Churchwardens at Cup-O-Joes only 8$;

50 foot coil pipe cleaner. You can cut to any length desired. Standard pipe cleaner diameter.

keeping these long pipe cleaners on hand is the only downside of a churchwarden in my opinion, so stock up and put it behind you

Sometimes when your in the middle of a smoke and want to swab some moisture, you don't have to take pipe apart to do so.

I bought a $20 F.E.S.S. 14" Churchwarden pipe on Amazon and it is pretty nice. especially the fact that the smoke is pretty cool when it reaches your mouth. I just wish I had a stand to show it off because it is big... :roll:

Let me guess... you had horror stories with pipes from Amazon or F.E.S.S. ?

I have seen those and considered buying one myself, I enjoy my churchwarden and other long stem pipes if the draw is right they will smoke cool.

Hard to go wrong for 20 bucks, A good way to see if one likes a Churchwarden without breaking the bank,
