So I got two meerschaum pipes, one given me ,the other came in a grab bag. They are pretty brown on the outside.
Is there such a thing as cleaning off the brown? Or does that kill the pipe?

Why not, I think it looks filthy. I mean, if it can be done, then I'd like a white pipe, not one that looks like someone used it to ream their butthole with.

If you want a white meer, you’re going to have to buy a white meer.
I bought an estate meer and the rim was black, tried cleaning it off and it only took a minuscule amount off. Not worth the time I put in to get get it cleaned. But if you’re saying you want to clean the whole pipe, no go.

Sometimes the black rim is painted on in the factory ala most Peterson meers.

I believe they call it fuming or fumed.

If you want a clean looking pipe maybe you should get a clay pipe. When they get stained you can put it in the fireplace and cleanse it with fire.
