My training said that after smoking a briar it needed rest; but I've read many accounts that this is not the case. One guy who has smoked for years is enamored of a particular pipe to the extent that he smokes it all day, day after day.

The same opinions about cobs?

Briars tend to need a rest due to moisture build up in the bowl. I have smoked the crap out of my Pete back to back times with no adverse effect but will rest it and give it time to dry every so often.

Cobs suck up moisture from the environment like crazy but so long as you are in a dry climate it is not adversely affected by anything more than the dampness of the smoke. I'd be wary of ones without the hardwood plug, but that is my personal preference. Personally I smoke the crap out of them once I am in the mood to smoke a cob. I have smoked back to back and with different blends with no adverse reaction. Then again after the third bowl back to back I am generally ready to take a break. YMMV

You can find numerous threads on here about the need to rest a pipe and find arguments both for and against with experience on either side. In the end it is your experience and if you have a smoke progressively getting wetter and worse I'f change pipes. Cobs don't cost that much that you can't put a few of them on you rack IMO. Find the technique that works best for you and run with it. You can always head over to www.corncobpipe.com and buy the grab bag of 10 cobs for 29.99, that'll definitely give you enough cobs to smoke and not set you back far at all.

Hello, Mike!

First let me say how nice it is to have you back regularly.

I find Cobs to be more forgiving. I have often smoked several bowls per day in a MM Cob with no ill effects. After this day I did give it a few days to rest, but I'm not absolutely convinced that it's necessary.

Cobs are incredibly forgiving. Of course part of this equation depends upon what type of blend you smoke. A good/dry VA or English Blend will allow many more bowls per specified time frame than goopy aromatics. (guilty) :D

On the other end of the scale, I've used the same cob, one bowl per day, day after day with no ill effects either. All I did was run a pipe cleaner through the stem (no filter) and wiped out the inside of the bowl with a paper towel after the smoke was finished and the bowl was cleaned out.

Hope this helps, Mike. In general Cobs are more forgiving. I'm not recommending heavily using/abusing Cobs, but they seem to bound right back and are always ready for more.

Great news! Thanks guys! And thank you MO Rob for the welcome back!

This time around with the pipe I'm on a stricter budget. In fact it's very strict. So cobs are definitely the way to go; plus I sold all of my pipes except one, which I put somewhere out of harms reach and now cannot find lol.

Not sure why I needed 70 pipes or 200 lbs of tobacco, which I sold when I quit. I'm thinking a dozen cobs and maybe a 20 lb cellar. We'll see how I do when the acquisitive bug strikes.

I don't know whether to be in awe of congratulate you in having acquired so much before....or the obligatory facepalm emoticon for having sold it as so many others in the past have.

Regardless enjoy the cobs and your time smoking brother. I look forward to reading about your rest cycles with the cobs.

Don't overlook Estate Pipes. Some darn good pipes can be had a very reasonable prices. Worst case, you might have to give them a good cleaning and sterilize them.

Mike, it's good to have you back! I've been smoking the one cob I have for more than 10 years. I even will admit to seriously abusing it at times. I would smoke it daily 1-4 bowls for weeks at a time without so much as running a cleaner through it. I'v never had a bad smoke from it that was anything other than a bad pack here and there. I diid finally have to drill out the bottom and plug it with walnut. They're very forgiving. I no longer treat my cob that way but back then I had no other way to find out what they could take. As always YMMV

Thanks for your interest!

I bought Bow-Legged Bear, Escudo, Westminster and Solani Aged Burley Flake. The Bear will serve as an HO. I smoked Escudo from almost day one in my smoking career until the "end" in February. At one time I had 100 tins cellared. I never developed a large taste for "English/Balkans," and use the terms anyway even given Pease's online article declaring that he as much as anyone had propounded these faulty definitions. Westminster is a classic English I always wanted to try. Smoking it now and so far it bears up under its description of smooth and elegant. I only smoked 3 or 4 bowls of the Burley Flake but got my first positive reaction to them through it. The Bear is a powwow of taste and nicotine.

I'm hoping to fully explore burley this time around. I think I've missed out.
