Cobs

My first pipe was a Corn Cob.....purchased for 49 cents at the Orchard Variety in 1965 when I was 11 years old. I belonged to the only pipe club to date, consisting of me, Charlie Duquette (still in contact with regularly) and Michael Callahan. Meetings held in the woods, in a pit we'd dug, partially boarded over. Grand times. We all saved up and pitched in for the various tobaccos we would sample as gentlemen and/or steal from fathers/brothers. Tobaccos: Field and Stream, Half & Half, Prince Albert, Cherry Blend. I think we might have saved up for some Sail as well. I haven't smoked any of those blends since.

Anyway, I feel like once again clenching a cob when the summer rolls around and I was wondering if there was such a thing as a quality cob made by someone out there and if so, who would you fellows recommend as a maker?

Missouri meerschaum have different levels of cobs and some hard wood pipes. There are people that make forever stems for the cob pipes. I would say get the best mm they offer and a forever stem and you are set.

Yes, the cheaper MMs are OK, but the higher priced MMs are better. We're talking a few bucks difference, and I am pretty much sold on the Country Gentleman myself. And there are cheaper acrylic stems out there than the Forever stems, but the latter are better, thinner, smoother, just generally better finished, and in my opinion worth the price of one or two. Or just buy a bag of extra plastic bits from MM and chew up the stock ones all you want.

Doug Erwin also makes some fantastic nosewarmer cobs. I have a few of these, and always have 1 or 2 in my regular rotation.

The Country Gentleman and Spindle shapes I have are perfect size, not too small, and with Dave Walkers Forever Stems they are fine smokers. IMHO, the stems on cobs are crap and if you really want to enjoy them buy good stems. The stems last forever, just replace the cobs as they burn out.

Can't add much to the fine comments/advice from the above Brothers. I do enjoy my cobs, maple/apple/cherry woods. Typically enjoy these with Burley and the occasional aro. :cheers: FTRPLT

Smoker13, welcome to the forum. I purchased my first cob a couple of years after your purchase and I was a few years older. Over the years I have smoked my share of cobs. These days I limit my purchases to pipes made by Missouri Meerschaum. My order of prefernce is Diplomat(5th Avenue), Mark Twain. The hardwood plug is a plus for me. Better to lose a cob than a good briar pipe.

Country Gents are great, but I am partial to bent Diplomats. I have one that smokes perfectly neutral and it so well broken in, that every smoke I have in it is all about the blend. For certain it's my hardest working pipe. Because of the hard wood plug and the plaster finish, the Diplomats are a little more money, but I think they are more than worth the 14.99 or whatever I paid for it.

I am not a "Lord of the Rings" pipe gimmick fan, but the MM Shire pipe is very nice too. It has a Diplomat bowl with a longer more durable stem. The bowl has thick walls and ample room for more complex mixtures. Good smokers.

I have a couple of cobs which I smoke regularly. My most beloved cob is a Country Gentleman which has been USED for about 6 years and it's still one of my favourite pipes.

Yesterday I've ordered an Elf Cobbit churchwarden. Pretty sure it will also be a champion smoker

And, I own an OLD MM cob Bulldog with 14ct gold coated band!! It smokes latakia blends like none of my other pipes, briars included

Well I went a little Cob Crazy - All the Missouri Meerschaums were on sale at smokingpipes.com, and the more I ordered, I figured why not get dups, and then I was so close to the free shipping, so why not get more and the end result, I'm getting 9 cobs in the mail before the big snow storm hits on Saturday. The Natural Freehand was the most expensive, $24.95, but I read a review of all the MM's and supposedly this is the best,driest smoker of all of them (I know, I know) so I got 2. The Mark Twain looked so cool and I love the guy I had to get 2 of those. 9 bucks a pop. Summer can't come fast enough!

I've got around 9 or 10 cobs myself, including the Natural Freehand. But the one that sees the most action is a Diplomat which I got back around '01 and is still going strong. Even has the original stem! I keep meaning to get a forever stem but never seem to get a round tuit!
