Sos, got me this Comoy's Grand Slam No. 398 straight bulldog off the 'Bay last year for $95. And I'm really dyiin' to show it off here on account of its killer bird's eye grain. Please don't take this the wrong way, but I can't show it off to anyone I know around here cause I'm the only pipe smoker I know, or at least that I'm still on speaking terms with. Hehe. Anyways, when it came in it was a piece of work. Cake buildup, blocked draft etc. But it shined up right nicely. Thanks for lookin'.

Cheers,

Great macro shot of that birdseye.

Also, great pipe. Grand Slam indeed.

It looks to have cleaned up nicely. That's some gorgeous wood on that puppy, how's it smoke? As good as it looks like it would?

That birdseye is sooo amazing, a very great looking pipe, congrats!

The grain on that pipe is absolutely amazing. Congratulations!

That looks like an exceptional Grand Slam!
We've never been mad at each other, so we have that going for ourselves!

Thanks much, ladies & gents. Altho straight grains are the most sought after, my preference has always been for bird's eye. Thanks again for your comments.

Winner!

Fantastic grain on the pipe and great photography skills.

I love a pipe with lots of birdseye and this is the most significant example I ever seen. It is something to die for!!! Wish it was mine

Well, I wouldn't go that far. It's just a piece of wood, after all, not the queens' Crown Jewels. Which I'm sure many have died for. But seriously, regarding photography, I do everything with my Android G4 cell phone. Fifty bucks a month with Verizon gets you one of these technological marvels for free, and I use it for everything. The camera and its editing functions are far better than my point & shoot digital camera. I don't even bother with the home computer anymore, cause I don't want to be confined to sitting at the table.

Most of my collection are factory cut pipes, meaning frazed then hand detailed. Comoys mainly. This particular pipe could have been given a much higher grade by Comoy. Grand Slams are sort of ho hum, as compared to Blue Ribands and Selected Straight Grains. My hunch is that in those days, it was straight grain blocks that were elevated to premium grades. Bird's Eyes were valued less. None of my Blue Ribands carry bird's eye for instance.

I tend to buy English estates because of their history and weathered patina. Don't find that on new $800 artisan pipes. LOL. By the way, when this pipe was cleaned I noticed a big wad of pipe clay at the base of the chamber, perhaps hiding a knifed ream job. Just goes show you, every peacock carries a few bad feathers. Thanks everyone for your kind comments.
