So I picked up a cool looking Dunhill Oom Paul of the ePrey. The description mentioned that there was something wrong with the stamping, which is why I think I got such a good price on it. It is hard to see but you can make out the stamp "NOT FOR SALE" underneath what appears to be a newer stamp with the normal stamping. I tried to do a little research but all I came up with was a quote from another forum:

These "Not For Sale" Dunhill's were intended as gifts to Sales Reps and Store Owners who sold Dunhill Pipes and Products. They stamped them NFS to insure the Store Owner or Sales Rep would not sell them. These generally draw more interest/bidders than other Dunhill's because they are somewhat of an oddity. They are the same quality as any other Dunhill, so they smoke the same.

Does anyone know anything about these Dunhills? After examining the pipe, I can say that it is in great condition. I cant find anything indicating a flaw in craftsmanship. Any comments would be appreciated.

Seems like theres an over stamp saying 5247 and NOT FOR (illegible on this screen). Perhaps a showroom model?

Appears to be a '69 fishtail stem size 4 shell briar shape 591. I've never seen the NOT FOR____ before. I'd like to know myself....

Agreed, looks like a '69. I've got a 120 from that year. Nice piece!

Just picked up an Oom Paul of that vintage too:

Betcha can't guess the brand.

Yeah, the markings on this are just strange. It's got a what I think is a shape number: 5247, and the NOT FOR SALE underneath the normal style nomenclature for that period. I just wonder if the stamps were done at the same time, or if it was stamped NOT FOR SALE with a shape number then stamped with the normal nomenclature later. And why the two different shape numbers I wonder? Is 591 F/T the same shape as the 5247?

This is the second Dunhill I have with strange markings.

Oh and, while I didn't include a profile pic of this pipe, it looks very much like the example Sas posted.

Oh and my Oom Paul is a lowly Jobey! LOL looked like a nice blast to me though.

I think the 5427 was a later stamp as it is over the D in Dunhill. Perhaps it even registers who it was given to.

The shape number would be 591. F/T stands for fishtail. I'd get it if it's available. Really.

591 seems to be the shape:

for example.

5247 seems to be the street address of one of the London Dunhll shops.

DUNHILL TOBACCO OF LONDON
NEW COLONNADE . DEVEREUX AVE. VINCENT, 5247 EAST LONDON
I never would have thought that number was a street address. That's pretty neat. Plus it makes a lot more sense. The later Dunhills use the four digit shape codes while the ones in the 60s had a different scheme.

Oh, and I still like the Jobey. Looks a lot like a Dunhill to me! :p

Have no fear, Mr. E. The Dunhill now sits comfortably on my pipe rack. I would have fired her up tonight but I couldn't decide what to smoke. She's got a very narrow, deep bowl.

If you dig a bit further into that post on said other forum, you will find where other pipe was purchased from. Also gives you the sellers thoughts.
