Guys,

I've bought a couple of estates lately that have Lakeland ghosts. Previously I've been able to smoke them out in a few bowls but one in particular still tastes like grannies knickers. I thought I'd enjoy the last of my ODF in this pipe and all I can taste is cheap perfume. None of the sweet nuttiness I was looking for. I know a bad choice of pipe to finish IPSD with. However does anyone suggestions for the exorcising this ghost?

Thanks all

Tim

The only thing I've found that works in a briar is a pipe retort.
Here's a video to explain a little. Lakelands ghost can be tough to get out.

It's one of pipe life's greatest mysteries! :lol!:

I've had success with taking the bowl down to the wood then leeching out the last of the gunk with alcohol.

I'll gently ream as much of the cake as I can without gouging the wood, then sand what's left until I get it all off. The closer I get to the wood, the finer grit sandpaper I'll use. A pencil or dowel rod with sandpaper wrapped around it is helpful to avoid scratching the rim. After that, a cotton ball or two stuffed in the bowl and soaked in isopropyl alcohol will leech out what's left of the gunk. Be careful not to let the alcohol drip or run onto the outside of the bowl because it can ruin the stain.

Be sure you get the shank and stem with a cleaner (or ten) dipped in alcohol, too. For smelly stems, just leave the wet cleaner inside for a while to dissolve as much of gunk as possible.

Once it dries out, it'll still have a little ghosting and alcohol smell, but it will go away after a few or several bowls.

Good luck!

Thanks guys, that alcohol boil pipe cleaning looks awesome. I was amazed at the gunk that came out. I'll have to get one of those kits for sure.

Oddly a little DGT seems to have helped with this ghost. I smoked a about a quarter of a bowl last night before the ghost got too much for me. This morning, I was able to smoke it down to the last quarter of the bowl before the ghost showed up. I think I'll try the smoke the hell out of it routine to see if it will come round.

Cheers all

Tim

Ya, Lakelands are a bugger to get rid of and no mistake. I've an estate Tobacconist Inc Poker that I love dearly that once was used for the dreaded L's.

And despite it being cleaned thoroughly and subjected to Walker's Ozone chamber for a full week still carries over the character. Not so much as it once did, but toward the end of the bowl it rears it's ugly head. Enough to be a distraction.

Never tried the methods suggested above but I'm minded to. Such a lovely pipe in every other way. And yes I've tried to smoke the demon out of it. No cigar as they say!

:silent:

Cheers,

RR

Hey, Even retorting a pipe I've still had to smoke the little bit of soap out of the heel of the pipe.
Try smok'en that sucker out first, hope you the best sir.

Yes, do as suggested in the posts above. Then try smoking something like 965 in the pipe for half a dozen bowls. The slight flowery taste in the background isn't wholly awful, the taste will diminish with each each bowl, and you may even miss it when it is completely exorcised. Or not.

Think I might be wait till Autumn here and hit the mofo with a few bowls of Gaslight, if that can't exorcise it I'll go the retort method. I should get a retort kit anyway with the amount of estates I seem to have coming in.

Thanks for the wise words fellow BoB.

Yeah I was gonna suggest running 4-6 bowls of Old Joe Krantz through it. That should do the trick...
