Disappointing tobacco

I have used a couple blends I didn’t like to stretch a blend I did that was similar in flavor. Or dump it in a bag and play with other blends just for kicks.

Peterson’s Hyde Park. From what I understand it used to be made by G&H and resembled their Rum Flake. Now, it’s no longer produced by them.

The tin I got not long ago was more like cigarette rolling tobacco to me. Didn’t seem to have any topping or flavour. Smoked quite harsh.

Disappointed in that one and do not recommend.

I'll name a name today: new Bengal Slices. I wasn't overly impressed with its match, but it was OK. It didn't make me want to buy another tin. I'd thought others had done a closer job of meeting that old flavor. I also didn't like that it crumbled into dust-sized particles. What has made it worse is that I still had maybe 1/4 of a tin remaining, and a few months ago when I tried it again, it was truly awful. I don't know what happened to it. It was just sitting in a jar (I'd taken it out of the tin when I bought it and jarred it). It was so foul that I had to cut the cake in that pipe, lightly sand down the walls, and scrub the airway with soap and water. That pipe was a really good smoker, too. It's still never been the same after that single bowl of new Bengal Slices. I'm not one to throw out tobacco, but I'll probably throw away the remaining flake or two. It's just not worth the hassle and fear of this happening again.

I also did not enjoy Hyde Park

I bought some stuff from a Smokers Abbey store, and it was called Chi Rho, best I can remember. It was supposed to be an English, and I was trying those out. It's not good at all, and I normally wouldn't throw tobacco away, but have thought to put in the fire pit next time we have a fire. Maybe it would briefly smell better. Since then, I"ve learned there are better entry level English blends like Sutliff English Oriental and PS Oriental Supreme.

For me, that's usually the case with aromatics---its hit or miss. I've learned that when you ask for others opinions, tobacco is like wine--everyone has a different palate and prefers different things. I've tried aromatics highly recommended by other forum members only to dislike them, and the complete opposite: told to avoid a particular aromatic and actually enjoyed it.

While SG does make some very good blends, aromatics are not for everyone so I doubt that you are smoking it wrong. You could always jar it and come back to it later, although aromatics dont really age well. You may just have to pass it along to another member....

I just can't bring myself to like nightcap, the first tin I opened, I ended up sorting out the whole tin because there were so many sticks the first pinch. Ended up with a fist sized amount of sticks, and what could only be a pebble, out of it before I smoked any. I don't know if that soured my opinion or not but when I lit the first bowl I knew it wasn't for me. I like the strong BBQ note in things like dark fired Kentucky and some English blends, but nightcap has more of a liquid smoke note to me which I have always hated the taste/smell of. I have another tin in the cellar I'll let mellow out, but I'm worried it might be from the same batch that is full of sticks lol. Could have been a bad batch or maybe my tastes will change though, but for that price I would expect a very nice stick-free tobacco, you know like half and half!

Of all the new-to-me blends I've tried in the last couple months, Haunted Bookshop has been the only swing and a miss. Still have 1.5 oz to get through so maybe it'll grow on me, but I'm in no hurry to get back to it.
